An independent research vehicle for edge-native and on-device AI.
Plainsight Systems is an independent research vehicle — a US limited liability company registered in Arizona, used to explore edge-native and on-device AI and publish open-source work under a clean legal and licensing structure. The corporate form exists primarily to hold and license this research cleanly.
Founder & Principal Researcher: Andrew P Hunter (Managing and Sole Member; US military veteran).
Corporate identity — formation records, licensing doctrine, and disclosures — is at plainsight-systems.com.
The exploration audits cargo-cult technology choices — defaults adopted by momentum rather than fit. Same lens across domains: characterise the received default, name the problem it solved when adopted, measure whether that problem is still the binding constraint, and ask what a fresh choice would look like made today.
Current threads
- On-device LLMs — hand-rolled C++ inference harnesses targeting the silicon they actually run on, no ML frameworks in the hot path. Air-gapped mixture-of-experts inference reaching 80–90 tokens/sec on Apple Silicon (M3); higher-VRAM operator-owned hardware (AMD Strix Halo) under research.
- Agentic-era code editor architecture — what an editor becomes when coding agents are first-class participants, with evaluation harnesses for measuring agentic performance against a defined task surface.
- Transformer theory from first principles — the full arc from Rosenblatt's Perceptron (1957) to Vaswani's Transformer (2017), implemented in C# with no ML framework.
- Low-power device control — sub-GHz radios and wakeup-receiver architectures for scenarios where Bluetooth is the assumed default but the range, power, or latency profile is wrong.
