Apr 21, 2021 at 9:16 comment added Roger Maioli The answer above by Jessica Woodhouse is absolutely marvelous, and I recommend everyone to read it. If you are looking for an academic article that makes roughly the claims made by Jessica, consider Sandra Macpherson's "Rent to Own; or, What’s Entailed in Pride and Prejudice." Like Jessica above, Macpherson disagrees with Peter Appel's contention that Longbourn was under a simple entail that could have been barred had Mr. Bennet so desired. She concludes that Longbourn was under a strict settlement and that, as Jessica says, Jane Austen was right all along.
Feb 23, 2021 at 22:49 comment added Francis Davey Best remove "f you live in the UK and you own your home in leasehold, then you have the same partial ‘bundle of rights’ that feudal lords granted to their tenant farmers" because it is not true and therefore misleading (feudal tenancy is quite different from leasehold). Also Scots land law and English land law are sufficiently different it makes no sense to talk of the "UK" here. I think your answer would stand better without this excursion into modern leasehold law.

meaningful link text instead of bare URLs; farmerss -> farmers; replace double hyphens with em dash (—).
Jan 13, 2020 at 16:13 comment added user729424 I'm sad that this answer hasn't gotten more upvotes, because it is absolutely excellent in every way. You have definitively debunked the idea that Mr. Bennett could have debarred the entailment of Longbourn. The Literature Stack Exchange is very lucky to be a home for some of your writing. Hopefully more readers will read your post and give it the upvotes it deserves.

Nov 22, 2019 at 22:45 comment added Jessica Woodhouse Hi Rand. I saw you questions about wards of chancery and read through the answers. They look about right to me based on reading Bleak House. But I have (obviously!) never practiced in chancery, so I hesitate to comment on something where I don't have any specialized knowledge. Take care!

Nov 20, 2019 at 8:09 comment added Rand al'Thor Nice to have an expert answer! Since you're here, we had another question a while back about legal issues in literature. I provided what I think is a decent answer based on barrack-room lawyering, but would appreciate feedback from a professional :-)
