Check your refrigerator—more than 1,300 cases of Miyoko’s vegan butter have been recalled in 10 states. The recall follows a tumultuous period for the plant-based brand, which was acquired by Prosperity Organic Foods last year following a battle for ownership involving founder Miyoko Schinner. VegNews has the breaking story here.
We’re still basking in the glow of victory after New York City banned horse-drawn carriages last week once and for all. But there’s even more good news coming out of NYC. Mayor Mamdani just appointed founder and former president of Voters For Animal Rights Allie Taylor as the city’s first-ever director of animal welfare. Check out our interview with Taylor here, who tells VegNews that “this role is an opportunity to help make animal rights part of the everyday work of city government.”
Will Panda Express ever bring back its beloved vegan orange chicken? While it’s currently not on the menu at the chain’s more than 2,600 US locations, the VegNews team did try all of the other vegan options at the American-Chinese eatery. Don’t miss our other in-store taste tests at Carl’s Jr., Burger King, and Subway, and then we also just shared our annual list of the worst fast-food chains for vegan food. Let’s just say that these restaurants need to do better … much better.
Finally, it is with heavy hearts that we announce the vegan world lost a legend this week—the great Howard Lyman. As a fourth-generation farmer from Montana, Lyman went vegan in 1991 and went on to publish two books (including Mad Cowboy: Plain Truth from the Cattle Rancher Who Won’t Eat Meat), spoke at conferences worldwide about the horrors of factory farming, received multiple awards for his tireless advocacy, and famously appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show. It was on that show that he convinced Winfrey to give up hamburgers, which led to a highly publicized lawsuit by the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association. Lyman appeared many times in the pages of VegNews over the years, and he will be forever missed.
