Dec 21, 2015 at 10:51 comment added John B My view is that you complicate too much: in case you find a mistake as you describe, and in case you feel comfortable doing it, please submit a "letter to the editor" of the journal in question, written professionally as mathematical paper, and ask that it is published.

Jul 11, 2010 at 6:27 comment added Gerhard Paseman To Greg Friedman: I apologize if I misled you; all the examples of the miscalculations I have are on posted personal web pages. Also, the miscalculations have little impact on the results. I might encourage the practice for the review/referee process, but not for published work. If I were to publish them in a peer-reviewed journal, my stance would be different. In fact, I have written to ask that others who have quoted my work get the calculations correct in print, so far without success, but fortunately with little impact. Jul 11, 2010 at 6:09 comment added Greg Friedman I've been convinced for quite some time that the mathematical community needs to set up some sort of wiki-style error database to keep track of everything from typos to major errors. But that aside, I'm somewhat concerned about the professional ethics of the practice mentioned here of intentionally leaving miscalculations in published papers just "to see if anyone would catch them".
