Maui Nui Botanical Gardens (MNBG) is seeking a full-time Garden Operations & Horticulture Supervisor in Kahului, Maui. MNBG is a 6-acre public botanical garden, with a mission to foster appreciation and understanding of Maui Nui’s plants and their role in Hawaiian cultural expression by providing a gathering place for discovery, education, and conservation.

Position Overview

The Garden Operations and Horticulture Supervisor provides hands-on leadership for the care, safety, function, and appearance of Maui Nui Botanical Gardens (MNBG). Directly performs landscape maintenance activities while working collaboratively with staff, volunteers, interns, and contractors, the Supervisor ensures that the public landscape, plant collections, Hawaiian crop cultivars, irrigation systems, tools, buildings, signage, and visitor spaces are maintained to a high standard. The Supervisor reports to the Executive Director and supervises a team of 4 individuals that are currently 2.9 FTE.

The Supervisor is expected to approach daily garden care as stewardship: protecting living collections, using water and other resources responsibly, maintaining a safe and welcoming gathering place, supporting conservation and education, and helping visitors and volunteers understand the importance of Maui Nui plants and their relationships to Hawaiian culture.

Required

• At least three years of professional landscape installation and/or maintenance experience, including automatic irrigation systems and basic irrigation troubleshooting and repair.
• At least six months of supervisory experience, including the ability to organize and lead a team toward a shared goal.
• Familiarity with the safe use and routine maintenance of power tools such as mowers, weed trimmers, blowers, and gas-powered carts.
• Experience with water-efficient landscaping, best practices for soil health, and integrated pest management.
• Ability to identify common native Hawaiian plants.
• Strong observational and problem-solving skills, including the ability to recognize plant-health concerns, irrigation problems, maintenance needs, and potential public-safety hazards.
• Initiative and sound judgment to prioritize work, address routine problems, and communicate promptly when a concern requires additional expertise or approval.
• Ability to work cooperatively with staff, volunteers, interns, community members, and visitors from diverse backgrounds.
• Basic computer skills sufficient for email, records, schedules, inventories, and  routine data management.
• Current driver’s license.
• Ability to work outdoors for extended periods and perform the physical duties described.
