I'm looking for a mystery movie about an ancient myth and its subsequent effects in the present day. It looked like a USA made movie, probably between 1988-1998. The local people and actors looked like Indian. It was an island, so most likely the movie took place in Sri Lanka.
At the beginning of the movie, a male narrator was talking about a myth: meanwhile there were scenes relating to his narration. He said something like:
Many years ago, there was a little kingdom in South Asia. The princess of the kingdom loved a poor and unemployed guy. They decided to escape because they couldn't marry. The king discovered this and alerted his army, who found them and killed them. From that point on, the curse of this forbidden love had remained of the responsibilities of this murder.
After that scene, the movie resumed in the present day, on an island with a tropical monsoon climate. The rains were sudden and heavy.
There was an American married couple. They came to the island for a holiday or the husband's business (I can't remember which). The husband was white, in his 40s, had a fit body, blue eyes and medium height. His wife was in her 30s, with blue eyes and medium blonde hair. She was taking pictures of the people, market place, landscapes, buildings, etc with her camera. Their relationship was good. They didn't have any kids but they were happy. They were kissing, having sex, making jokes, having fun, etc.
They were staying at a hotel. It wasn't top quality, but it was clean. The building didn't have many floors: they were staying at second or third floor, I guess. One night she had a nightmare about that myth which the narrator had told earlier. After that she changed psychologically: she saw some visions and began investigating the myth.
One day they went to a restaurant. There was a fountain in the middle of the restaurant and there was a band playing ethnic rhythms. The tables were around the fountain and there were about 50 tables. After a while, some men also entered the restaurant. Most of them were wearing military clothes. Their leader saw this American couple and expressed his greetings to see foreign people like them.
He looked Indian, had military clothes, had dastar (a turban) on his head, a medium beard and aged about 40. He asked permission from the husband to let him dance with his wife. There was a slow ethnic song and they started to dance. He gave her some information about him and his country. The wife was impressed about it and she kind of fell in love with him.
Unfortunately I couldn't remember the rest of it.
