Robert Gaal heeft dit gedeeldSo many announcements this week from AI models, but everyone I spoke to at HumanX only talked about plumbing. Over the past few days in Amsterdam, Milou Brand and I recorded the first episodes of BNR Nieuwsradio’s new podcast about what AI actually delivers on. We sat down with leaders from IKEA, Prosus, Philips, Booking, bunq and ING. Different industries, different ideas, but most conversation ended up in the same place: What’s underneath your model? What skills do you need to share across the team? What harness do you buy, or build? As someone who spends his days building that layer at Klime, it was great to hear the biggest companies in the country name it as the crucial piece. Subscribe here: https://lnkd.in/emYHHXwa

Robert Gaal heeft dit gedeeldI'd have spent this on EU startups so we can ACTUALLY USE the compute, but maybe that's just me.Robert Gaal heeft dit gedeeldThe AI Gigafactories call is now open. Today, we launched a call for tenders to establish up to seven AI Gigafactories across Europe, boosting Europe’s computing capacity and unlocking more than €30 billion in investment. Led by industry and supported by up to €10 billion in EU and national funding, the initiative is expected to unlock at least €20 billion in private investment across the Union. I am pleased to see Member States, industry, and the Commission coming together to build these facilities, which are key to strengthening our technological sovereignty. Access to the massive computing power of AI Gigafactories is a strategic necessity for Europe. This is a milestone for Europe in becoming an AI Continent. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gvK3Cg2r

Robert Gaal heeft dit gedeeldThis is the way.Robert Gaal heeft dit gedeeldFrom my holiday address, I’m reading the amazing Nalden, who is dropping some serious truth bombs about “marketing” and “growing” in software in his latest newsletter You should definitely read it: https://lnkd.in/eetaqvHC I couldn’t agree more with his take! It takes me back to the early days at Weaviate, where I tried just about everything to get into the developer’s (not agents yet!) mindspace Nowadays, that process has been highly professionalized, but kept in that same experimental vein, by Philip Vollet and his team. Back when Megan O’Leary was still at Battery Ventures, she even wrote an awesome blog about it: https://lnkd.in/es4zduN5 plus, the team from Perpetual will soon publish something on this too! One thing has always been key for me: focus on the relationship we have with the developer and agent. Instead of saying, "Weaviate is better than X," we say, "This is how Weaviate can help you with Y." We’ve tried so many different things along the way. Or, as Nalden beautifully puts it: “Veel Forward”

Robert Gaal heeft dit gedeeldImpressive stuff from one of our best. Check it out!Robert Gaal heeft dit gedeeldI have been learning how to train AI models in the past few months; Now I'm Introducing Masker & Masker-mini 🎭 Masker-mini is a machine learning model that removes personally identifiable information, such as names, addresses, and identification numbers from a piece of text. It is small enough (~20MB) to run on-device and ship with your app or website, sensitive data never has to leave the device. I have trained it on a mix of real and synthetic data in the 24 official European languages 🇪🇺. In my benchmarks it scored a strict F1 >0.8 for all of these languages. If you need better accuracy, Masker is its bigger sibling. This model should run just fine on most hardware, but is a bit too big to ship in a mobile app or browser. Both are open-weights models, available under a permissive license. I strongly believe access to sovereign frontier AI models is an existential problem for Europe. Currently, the work we do with AI is mostly powered by models created in China and the USA. When the US cut off access to Fable last month, it showed our growth should not entirely depend on models we don't control. I would encourage everyone to learn more about how machine learning works under the hood! It's not as hard as you may think and a lot of fun. We need more builders, even if you're tinkering with small models :) Link to an in-browser demo of masker-mini is in the replies ✌️

Then won the hack w the best use of n8n 😂 We built poof to handle the annoying parts of selling your stuff online. The listings, the buyer messages, the negotiations. Launched it and passed 1,500 signups in under 24 hours. The prize means we’re off to Berlin too! Thanks to Young Creators, Prosus, n8n , Mollie, Apify and everyone who made the weekend happen. And to everyone already wanting to give poof a go. poof 💨

Robert Gaal heeft hierop gereageerdRobert Gaal heeft hierop gereageerdWe won the HumanX pitch with Avendar! 🏆 Yesterday I got to pitch Avendar at HumanX in Amsterdam. Out of hundreds of applications, we were selected as one of 25 companies for the semi-finals. We made it to the final six, and ended up winning! HumanX is a three-day conference bringing together people building, investing in and working with AI. A great place to share what we’re building at Avendar and why we think it matters. Very cool to see that our story resonated with the jury and the audience. We’re building Avendar because we believe Europe needs its own AI technology for critical investigations, and that investigators need better tools to work with increasingly large amounts of complex data. Also great to spend a few days around so many people working on AI. Lots of good conversations and new connections. Thanks to the HumanX team for having us, and of course to everyone at Avendar. I got to do the pitching, but there’s obviously a whole team behind it. On to the next one! 🙌🏼

Robert Gaal heeft hierop gereageerd🚀 Last week the King announced that we would get €500M to kickstart NADI - Nationaal Agentschap voor Disruptieve Innovatie. Yesterday we announced that we are launching our first program! We are collaborating with our German friends at SPRIND - Bundesagentur für Sprunginnovationen to get teams to try out radical new ways to design more energy efficient AI chips. Teams can submit their plans until the end of Nov. We will pick 7 who will each get €2.6M non-dilutive funding. After 8 months we pick 3 who get an additional €7M. Bring us your big idea. Don't make it small. Be bold.

You finally get to be the investor you yourself would've wanted to have. You join the Atomico Angel Programme and start a group for investors named Operator Exchange.
You say “let me know how I can be helpful”, but actually help when you say that.
(Hey you, reading this! Are you a founder that needs funding? You should just email me through my website. I don't read DMs here.) -

The Dutch version of the Financial Times asks you to write something for them every week. You miss your deadline constantly but your chief editor helps you out a lot. You discover that, contrary to what you thought, people actually read newspapers.

Two of your best friends think of a cool word for the Bluetooth hacking you’re doing on weekends: Roomware! It’s 2006 so it makes sense.
You win a Spinaward which your friend gets to receive in front of hundreds of people who all make ten times our salary, which is incredibly funny.
Then the internet gets faster, mobile phones too, and local connections matter less and less. You and your friends shut it down in favor of your real jobs. -

Project weergevenYou fall in love with an app at a P.F. Chang's in Austin during SXSW. You ask the creators if they want to launch in Amsterdam. "Send us a list of venues!" A few weeks later your city is the first outside the US to launch on Foursquare. Decades later, you still miss the app every time you sit down at a restaurant.

Why Your €2M Feature Roadmap Is Killing Your Fintech Sales Pipeline I watched a Dutch trade finance vendor spend millions chasing "pan-European" growth. Revenue grew 12%. Burn rate tripled. Meanwhile, a focused competitor captured their home market by doing one thing exceptionally well. If you're a European fintech vendor selling treasury management, trade finance, or payment solutions to corporate banks, this truth is uncomfortable: your technology doesn't differentiate anymore. Neither does your feature list. Here's what actually closes deals in 2026: → Implementation in 12 weeks, not 18 months → API-first architecture without middleware complexity → Support teams responding in hours, not weeks → Physical presence in the markets you serve But most fintech vendors are doing the opposite. They're: • Depleting engineering budgets chasing feature parity with 20-year-old incumbents • Diluting resources across too many geographies • Building blockchain modules nobody uses while prospects need better Excel exports • Selling remotely when banks buy relationships, not technology The gap between what procurement teams say they want (feature checklists) and what actually wins deals (strategic value) is widening. And it's costing European vendors millions in lost pipeline. I've just published a comprehensive analysis examining why regional fintech players are struggling to win deals with corporate clients, despite having superior technology. More importantly, it provides a framework for what actually works. The full article includes: ✓ The Five-Question Framework for strategic clarity every vendor should answer ✓ Market intelligence on procurement criteria that transformed completely ✓ Specific tactics that win: from implementation speed to SI partnerships ✓ Real examples of vendors who pivoted from failure to dominance ✓ Actionable guidelines to audit your roadmap and kill feature bloat ✓ The truth about why physical presence outperforms cloud-native brilliance If you're burning cash on features nobody wants, expanding into markets you can't win, or wondering why your POCs never convert—this article will give you the uncomfortable clarity you need to change course. Because in 2026, strategic retreat might be your best growth strategy. Read the full article to discover how to stop competing on features and start winning on outcomes that matter to corporate procurement teams. https://lnkd.in/dhJk3EXZ --- #Fintech #TreasuryManagement #TradeFinance #B2BSales #FinancialTechnology #CorporateBanking #ProductStrategy #GoToMarket

EXCLUSIVE: Kilo Code, the AI code startup from former GitLab cofounder Sid Sijbrandij, is taking aim at Lovable with a new App Builder tool. CEO Scott Breitenother says: “We’re not very popular at the AI Christmas party.” “We just see it as the beginning of the flow,” Emilie Schario, who leads Kilo’s engineering and product, tells Upstarts Media. “It’s code that you could ship. It’s not just going to make for a pretty demo, but be able to solve the task.” https://lnkd.in/ek2vAGEP
