LOVELY LĀHAINĀ LOCATION
Land of sunsets, waves, and aloha.
The Old Lāhainā Restaurant and Lūʻau is on one of the sunniest, most picturesque areas of the west side of Maui. Since the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, the sunsets are absolutely breathtaking and range from mild blues and pinks to looking like the sky is on fire with bright reds and oranges, which contrast magically with the nearby tiki torches’ flames. The sound of the waves is constant and peaceful at the site of this Old Lāhainā Restaurant and Lūʻau, lulling each visitor under a tropical spell. During whale season in Maui from November to early March, you may even see a tail slap or breach in the distance.
RICH WITH HISTORY
Land, hula, myths/legends.
Back before Maui was a premier vacation destination, Lāhainā was the Royal Capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom from 1820 to 1845. The land was named for the hot, hot sun (Lā hainā means “cruel sun”) that is much more bearable with air conditioning and Mai Tais. In an entire year, Lāhainā receives an average of just over one foot—13 inches of rain mostly from December to February.
You could say that hula is a way of communicating prayer through dance. The enchanting hula was developed in the Hawaiian Islands by Polynesian settlers that arrived as early as 400 A.D. and developed over the hundreds of years of living on the islands. The Old Lāhainā Restaurant and Lūʻau at 1251 Front Street, Lāhainā is known for having some of the most talented hula dancers in Hawai’i. Graceful movements and ornamental outfits welcome guests and inspire you to want to get out of your seat and move along.
The myths and legends of Hawai’i are fascinating and lengthy, but many spawn from the four main Hawaiian gods. Kāne, the God of Creation and Sky is revered for being the father of all living creatures. Kū is the God of War. The God of the Ocean is Kanaloa, a mighty God of the underworld and a teacher of magic. And the most peaceful of all, Lono, the God of Peace, Rain, and Fertility as well as music.
FULL OF CULTURE
Lāhainā is full of art, music, dance, and history.
The town of Lāhainā is full of culture, from the colorful local art galleries along Front Street to the historical buildings, museums, and plaques describing the significance of the area. At the Old Lāhainā Restaurant and Lūʻau, the culture starts through the beat of the pahu, the Hawaiian drums, and continues on to so much more. With cultural demonstrations, learn Hawaiian arts and crafts as you jam out to local music. Watch the musical and mystical hula about early migration to the islands. The story continues with ancient hula and chants, stories of the missionaries, and the last king Kalālaua. The costumes in each dance are intricately decorated and accentuate the graceful movements of our talented hula dancers.
