Winter Activities
The fun doesn’t stop when the snow starts falling! Embrace the outdoors year-round by participating in one of the many winter recreational activities offered at our state parks, including:
Ice Skating
Twelve of our state parks offer ice skating, and many offer skate rentals as well! Make sure to call ahead to ensure conditions are suited for skating, follow all posted signs, and stay off the ice if you haven’t verified that it’s safe.
Cross-Country Skiing/Snowshoeing
Did you know our trails systems remain open in the winter? Pop on a pair of snowshoes or cross-country skis to explore the wonders of nature in the winter. From animal tracks to frozen waterfalls and ponds, many state parks and historic sites offer rental equipment, as well as classes on how to use the equipment properly.
Snowmobiling
Snowmobiling is a fun, family-friendly activity. There are over 10,500 miles of trails within the statewide snowmobile trail system, which traverses 45 counties and is maintained by over 200 clubs. Riders can operate a snowmobile beginning at age 10 after completing an operator training course, which provides fundamental information to ensure the safety of all riders and trail users.
Ice Fishing
At some state parks, frozen lakes and ponds become great spots for ice fishing—with some state parks even hosting winter festivals and events where you can fish. Similar to ice skating, make sure to call ahead to ensure conditions are suited for walking, follow all posted signs, and stay off the ice if you haven’t verified that it’s safe.
Sledding
Many historic sites have vast, sloping grounds you can explore all throughout the year. When blanketed with a layer of snow, they turn into great hills for sledding! If attempting to sled at a state park or historic site, ensure it’s during regular operating hours and sledding is allowed.
