🗼 The Elements Of Product Design (https://lnkd.in/dxWDJmTg), an interesting look at product design through the lens of reality, problem space and solution space — by viewing it as a stack of decisions built on top of a stack of knowledge. Put together by Jamie Mill on top of Jesse James Garrett’s work, and discovered via Dan Brown 🤎. ✅ Design decisions happen across many different layers. ✅ They can be aesthetic, structural, conceptual, strategic. ✅ Each layer requires a different approach, skills, expertise. ✅ Bottom layers heavily impact and shape the upper layers. 🚫 If upper layers don’t map well to layers below → poor UX. ✅ Our digital products must match the complexities of life. ✅ We map life by building a simplified knowledge model of it. ↳ E.g. we observe behavior, learn the domain, track user needs. ✅ Then we make decisions about products to offer to match it. 🚫 We often focus too much on individual touchpoints and UI. ✅ First, we explore desired business outcomes (strategy). ✅ Then, we define objects, relationships, actions, IA (concept). ✅ Afterwards, we explore interaction design and flow (touchpoints). ✅ Finally, we refine micro-interactions, UX writing and artwork (UI). ✅ To innovate, repeatedly study problem/solution spaces separately. Many companies assume that design mostly happens in the UX team. But every person contributing to a product even in the smallest way co-shapes and co-designs the end user experience. In fact, much of the design happens before users interact with a screen, from word-of-mouth to public reviews. For any product or a service, design happens everywhere. In marketing, in sales, in editorial, in engineering, in customer service, in 3rd-party apps and integrations. And more often than not, products are designed by people who don’t have a “designer” in their title. Probably the best investment in a product team is to have teams working on problem and solution spaces separately, and to spend enough time building an accurate conceptual model of the solution space. As designers, we often excel at the UI design, often with plenty of underlying challenges on the layers below. But if you find yourself seeking a challenge, explore the messy layers of product strategy and conceptual model. Atomic Design by Brad Frost (https://lnkd.in/d3HQ7EK6 )is a brilliant methodology that helps UX/UI specialists construct robust, modular design systems—not just isolated pages. The hierarchical stages are: Atoms: Fundamental UI elements like buttons, labels, and inputs. Molecules: Simple assemblies of atoms—e.g. a search field with label, input, and button. Organisms: Distinct interface sections built from molecules and atoms, such as headers or cards. Templates: Layout structures that organize organisms and molecules, shaping content hierarchy. Pages: Fully realized templates filled with real content—this is where the user experience is validated. This methodology allows us to navigate between the abstract and the concrete, ensuring consistency, scalability, and a shared vocabulary across design and development teams. 🔮 The AI Design Library (https://aidesign.guide), a wonderful free practical guide for designers with no-fluff guides, helpful tools and resources to help with design system components, prototyping workflows, automations, components, naming conventions and documentation — in videos and guides. Beautifully put together by wonderful Romina Kavcic (highly recommended to follow as well!). I sincerely hope that over time we won’t have to rely on prompt engineering guides any more, but it's helpful to get a glimpse of how designers utilize AI and what plugins and resources they use. A wonderful starter to get going and see how you can optimize your workflows. Prioritize design projects by simple, complicated, and complex decisions. In this throwback featured post, we enjoy Paula Gomes's article, which offers a clear way for UX teams to prioritize their time and resources across multiple projects, even with limited capacity. This approach, a form of lightweight DesignOps, categorizes projects as simple, complicated, or complex to focus efforts where they matter most while staying user-focused. Check out her article: https://lnkd.in/giAUyhfq Paula presents a framework to help UX teams focus on projects when resources are limited using her gaming background. We suggested some research ideas. Inspired by the Cynefin framework, she classifies projects into three types: 1️⃣ Simple Projects Straightforward tasks with known variables. The UX team can provide guidelines, best practices, and design systems so game teams can manage these independently. For example, creating a new in-game event using an established format. → Use lightweight research like surveys or usability tests to validate tasks. Leverage analytics to confirm expected user behaviors. 2️⃣ Complicated Projects Tasks with identifiable challenges but some unknowns. For instance, if data shows a high player drop-off during the first-time user experience (FTUE), the UX team can provide research and guidance to address the issue. → Conduct short interviews or task analysis to pinpoint specific issues. Use tools like click tracking for deeper signals into user workflows. 3️⃣ Complex Projects Ambiguous problems with no clear causes, like low retention or monetization metrics. These require in-depth research and a design thinking approach to uncover and resolve underlying issues. → Apply exploratory methods like ethnographic research or co-design workshops to tackle ambiguous problems. Use a/b testing, diary studies or contextual inquiry to uncover hidden user needs. Helio provides fast, targeted user feedback to guide decisions at every project stage. The closer your components match between Figma and code in atomic structure, props and behaviour, the easier it becomes for AI to understand, translate and actually use them. It's not just about being tidy. It's about removing friction so AI can help designers and engineers move faster with fewer gaps to bridge.
