Fisheries Monitoring & Tagging
State agencies across Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida continued tagging and releasing reef fish to monitor post-release outcomes and assess survival trends.
In 2025, trained fisheries biologists conducted 680 observer trips aboard charter boats and headboats, documenting catch and discard rates, release conditions, predation, and angler use of descending devices and venting tools.
Across these trips, 7,995 reef fish were tagged and released, contributing to a growing dataset used to evaluate how different release methods affect fish survival.
