I'm looking for a story I read about whose protagonist (a girl, I think) had a unique ability that anything she wrote with ink on paper would inevitably become true.

Plot points I remember:

  • At a few points, she would involuntarily write down a prophecy. One of these prophecies included the line "The bridge behind you washed away".
  • At one point, she came into possession of a book that purported to contain information about the future; however, aside from those involuntary prophecies, it was constantly in flux.
  • She's being hunted by an evil king who wants her to use her power to secure his rule forever. She's eventually captured and forced to write a prophecy declaring him "king now and forever". However, she uses the loophole that only what she writes on paper becomes true, writing down the prophecy on a piece of paper partially covered in candle wax so that it instead reads "king never", defeating him.

Where and When: I read this serialized in a children's literature magazine, American, about 10-15 years ago.

I’m pretty sure you’re looking for “The Girl Who Writes the Future” by Frederic S. Durbin (incorporating character and worldbuilding suggestions from readers) serialized in Cricket magazine.

The rather on-the-nose title makes it pretty clear, but I also remember the loophole about the wax at the end.

More information on the author’s Web site.

  • I think this is right, and I recall the magazine name as well. Thank you! Commented 9 hours ago
