In moments of national tragedy, leadership is revealed not through policy fights but through language. This piece looks at how past presidents and administrations spoke to the American people after horrific acts of violence, police killings, mass shootings, and terror, and contrasts that with the tone and posture we are hearing now following the murders of Alex Pretti and Renee Macklin Good in Minneapolis. Historically, leaders were expected to acknowledge grief, fear, anger, and humanity, to center victims and families, and to lower the temperature while trusting investigations and the rule of law. What we are seeing today is a rush to judgment, narrative control, and division instead of compassion and accountability.
