- Assistant Lecturer, School of Health Sciences, University of Canterbury
Conrad Goodhew is a New Zealand Registered Dietitian and Accredited Sports Dietitian working across professional sport, university education and clinical private practice.
His clinical work primarily supports athletes and active individuals, with particular interests in injury rehabilitation, nutrition around surgical recovery, low energy availability (LEA) & relative energy deficiency in sport (REDs), disordered eating and the relationship between health, wellbeing and high performance in the active population. He works collaboratively with sports physicians, physiotherapists, psychologists and other health professionals to provide practical, multidisciplinary support.
Conrad has extensive experience within professional sport across a number of different codes. He spent eight seasons with the Crusaders before moving into the New Zealand Sevens programme and has also worked with Canterbury Cricket and Matatū (among a number of other sports). His wider work with New Zealand Rugby includes contributing to nutrition strategy and education for pathway athletes. He also provides nutrition education, consultancy and programme development for sporting organisations, teams and academies.
Alongside his applied work, Conrad teaches nutrition within the Bachelor of Health programme at the University of Canterbury and also contributes to the education and supervision of future dietitians through university research projects, thesis supervision and professional supervision.
Conrad is particularly interested in translating complex nutrition science into clear and useful advice. His approach recognises that while marginal gains can matter in high-performance sport, they are only valuable when the fundamental behaviours that drive health, recovery and performance are consistently in place. He aims to challenge oversimplified nutrition messages and help athletes, practitioners and the public distinguish credible evidence from marketing, trends and unsupported opinion.
