Dr Hoani Smith is a Lecturer in Sport Management and Sport and Exercise Science at Lincoln University, and an Honorary Adjunct Lecturer at the University of Southern Queensland. He is Kāi Tahu from Ōtākou.
His research sits across sport, health and wellbeing, with expertise in athlete performance, physical activity, training load, recovery, sleep, chronic disease prevention and sport management. His applied sport science work has a particular focus on basketball and includes research on training and competition demands, blood flow restriction training, tendon health and athlete monitoring.
Hoani also researches Māori and Pacific health and wellbeing, including culturally grounded approaches to physical activity and the role of performing arts in supporting cardiovascular, metabolic and community health outcomes. His current research and grant activity includes work focused on cardiovascular and metabolic health, physical activity and chronic disease prevention.
His current research is also expanding into Māori and Pacific health, with projects and grant activity focused on culturally grounded physical activity, cardiovascular and metabolic health, and chronic disease prevention.
Before entering academia, Hoani spent more than a decade working in university and high-performance sport. He is also a Trustee of the Selwyn Sports Trust and contributes to research collaborations across Aotearoa New Zealand and internationally.
He is particularly interested in translating research into accessible, evidence-based information that can help athletes, communities, sporting organisations and the wider public make informed decisions about sport, exercise and health.
