- Director SUSFERM Centre; Microbiology Professor, University College Cork
John Morrissey graduated in 1990 from University College Cork with a BSc in Microbiology. He subsequently moved to the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg, Germany to carry out research for his PhD in the area of yeast cell biology and was awarded a PhD for this research in 1994. His post-doctoral research career brought him first to the University of California, Berkeley, USA (1995-1997) and then to the John Innes Research Centre, Norwich, UK (1998-2000). Since 2000, John leads the Yeast Biotechnology Group at University College Cork, Ireland. He is also Director of the SUSFERM Fermentation Science and Bioprocess Engineering Centre at UCC. His major research focus is on generating knowledge and developing technology to aid the application of yeasts in food and industrial biotechnology. Areas of interest include yeast physiology, metabolism and evolution as well as the application of genome engineering and synthetic biology strategies to engineer industrial yeast species for biotechnology. John has committee roles the European Federation of Biotechnology and the International Commission on Yeasts. He is currently Editor in Chief of FEMS Yeast Research, the yeast community journal.
