- Lecturer in Human Geography, Loughborough University
Dr Azmeary Ferdoush is a Lecturer in Human Geography at Loughborough University, UK, and holds the title of Docent in Political Geography at the University of Oulu, Finland. As a political geographer, he is broadly interested in exploring the way human-made ideas of borders and bounded spaces affect human mobility and vice versa. As such, he specializes in the study of the state, territory, borders, sovereignty, (non)citizenship, and migration.
His scholarship thus sits at the intersection of political geography, critical geopolitics, decolonial praxis, and qualitative research methods. He is the author of "Sovereign Atonement: Citizenship, Territory and the State at the Bangladesh-India Border," published by Cambridge University Press, and is currently leading a multi-sited research project titled "Geographies of example: Finding the example within the exception and beyond (GeoEx)," funded by a Leverhulme Trust Research Leadership Award.
Dr Ferdoush's recent research explores how, why and with what tools modern sovereign states rank human lives, specifically through creating exemplary and exceptional categories.
