Carried out fieldwork in Indonesia and archival research in the Netherlands, widely published on theoretical and comparative topics, with special strength in connections between philosophy and social science. Research topics include language politics, semiotics, anthropology of moralities, religion, material culture, moral economy. Author of "Animals, Robots, Gods: Adventures in the Moral Imagination" (Penguin Allen Lane 2024, Princeton 2025), "Ethical Life: Its Natural and Social HIstories" (Princeton 2016), "Christian Moderns: Freedom and Fetish in the Mission Encounter "(California 2007), "Signs of Recognition: Powers and Hazards of Representation in an Indonesian Society" (California 1997).
