This year, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) has chosen “African Americans in Times of War” as the theme for African American History Month. This photograph was taken for publicity purposes on July 31, 1944, and comes from the series, Central Subject Files, 1941-1946, created by the Port of Embarkation in Los Angeles, California.  This photograph is of the Camp Ross Band members who were stationed in Wilmington, California. When these African American soldiers were not playing in the band, they were supplying soldiers with much needed cargo overseas during World War II.
