"UGHHHHHHHH! I can't stand this crazy house!"
Matthew, "Surprise"

CartoonMania was an online animated series by Matthew Littlemore. It was first published in 2017 and lasted three years until ending in 2019.

Matthew Littlemore plays a caricatured version of himself, portrayed as an animator living in a 100-story house with 320 of his cartoon characters. He has a bad temper and his toons' antics often make him angry.

The original series ended on September 20, 2019 with a movie called CartoonMania: The Movie. After Timmy and Tanya help Matthew get an animation job, Matthew has to get better at controlling his anger. At the same time, Matthew and his characters have to fight a mysterious figure who's a danger to the house.

A reboot of the show was announced following the movie. The reboot was to be a full retooling of the show that would have take place after the movie and have different character designs. It also would have referenced the original show and movie.

However, these plans were not to be. In June 2020, several cast and crew members of the reboot left the production and parted ways with working with Littlemore due to repetitive instances of him creating lewd artworks of JoJo Violet, Penny Bleat, Tanya and Victor Virus on social media, trying to implant inappropriate context on both the series' scripts and in personal engagements between him and his crew, emotionally abusing fellow colleagues and friends based on accusations of his behavior and forcing his fetishes on other crew members without giving them permission to do so. After a confrontation between former friends and casts, it was confirmed that production for the reboot officially ceased. As a result, Littlemore deactivated the majority of his social media accounts, hidden all comments on his videos and stated from that point forward, he would never return to social media.

On September 15, 2023, all comments for Littlemore's videos were turned back on and he announced he is returning to post on Youtube frequently as well as explaining how he has been impersonated and doxxed multiple times and he will continue making cartoons. The status of the any potential revival of the reboot remains yet to be revealed.

In June 2024, it was revealed that Animator320 is going to rename the show to "320 Freleng Avenue."

In March, 20, 2026, the pilot for the reboot was released and can be watched here

Influences for the series include Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, Animaniacs, and Mickey Mouse cartoons.

CartoonMania provides examples of:

  • Acquired Error at the Printer: "Whatever Happened to Victor Virus?" toys around with this trope as it shows that all of Matthew's characters were brought to life using a printer-like machine. According to Matthew, when creating Victor, the former forgot to color the latter in just as soon as the machine starting printing. Matthew downloaded piece of software that he assumed would help solve the problem, but the program was actually malware. The printer malfunctioned, subsequently morphing Victor's legs into a ghoulish tail and giving him a code-like pattern.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Quite a few toons get their own time to shine:
    • The Stick Figure Bros. get a whopping three shorts to themselves. Those being "Get Your Shine Box", "Fireworks", and "Glue".
    • McGee gets "Blueprints", where he tells the tale of how the house came to be.
    • Roland RG-402 SpaceGecko gets "Rise of the Flightless", where he learns to walk after his UFO breaks.
    • Count Quarterbacula gets "Double Conflict", where his football playing annoys Matthew more than usual.
    • Roy and Otis Johnny Emu get "Diamond", where they have a duel over who gets to keep a diamond.
  • A Lizard Named "Liz": A few of the animal-based characters have surnames related to their kind. For example, a sheep named Penny "Bleat" and a duck named Wacky "Quacky".
  • Animal-Vehicle Hybrid: Of the chemical element toons, Hafnium is mix between a fish and a submarine, Indium is one between a lion and a race car, Maganese is one between a chicken and a bulldozer, and Scandium is one between a turtle and a bike.
  • Animesque: One of the cartoon characters introduced in the "We Built This City" video is a fox girl clearly modeled after an anime character, going by her Sailor Fuku outfit and giant Anime Hair. She's even animated in a choppier framerate to match.
  • Anger Montage: In the movie, Matthew is shown a compilation of him raging over minor things, like ordering a ten-piece nugget meal and getting only nine.
  • Animate Inanimate Object: A few of the cartoon characters seen throughout the series are everyday objects. For example, Victor is a living Computer Virus.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: In the Halloween special, Matthew is chased by a series of weapons, including knives, flamethrowers, guns, and... a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Though, this is Justified, as Matthew is stated to have a nut allergy.
  • Art Evolution: Though still somewhat stiff, animation tests that were intended for the now scrapped reboot showed that the animation became a lot more smoother and less rugged.
  • Art Initiates Life: "Whatever Happened to Victor Virus?" reveals the toons were made with a machine known as the "Animated Lifeform Printer 3000".
  • Author Avatar: Matthew is very obviously based and named after the series' creator, Matthew Littlemore.
  • Barrier-Busting Blow: Stanley has a habit of bursting through walls through sheer force. He's done this on two occasions: "Acknowledgement" (to break into the Webtoon Hall of Fame) and The Movie (to break into JoJo's lab to save her and Professor Qwertyson).
  • Battle Discretion Shot: At one point during the episode "Diamond", Roy and Otis have an argument that ends with them beating the ever-loving shit out of each other. All that is seen during this brawl is Penny and Victor's horrified expressions.
  • Berserk Button:
    • Count Quaterbacula seems to take great offense to people suggesting he plays baseball.
    • Tommy StickFigure's known for his Hair-Trigger Temper, but the one thing that makes his blood boil the most is asking him to "get his shine box".
  • Big "NO!": Lucifer Killingsworth after getting disintegrated by Matthew's scream.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Matthew delivered a big one after Mcgee told him who's in charge of the blueprints.
  • Bizarrchitecture: The house is basically a 100-story acid trip where every single floor breaks the laws of physics in one way or another. Granted, it was designed by Wacky Quacky...
  • "Blackmail" Is Such an Ugly Word: Lucifer Killingsworth think bad guy sound pretty harsh, he liked to be called malevolent mastermind.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: In the movie, Chompy is brainwashed into killing Penny. Luckily, Matthew is able to undo the brainwashing by using a hypnotizing pocket watch to snap Chompy back into reality.
  • Bread, Eggs, Milk, Squick: "Treasure Map" reveals that Matthew owns a chest full of things he had when he was younger; including baby blankets, a toy train, and magazines featuring scantily-clad women in swimsuits. Y'know, like all children have.
  • Butt-Monkey: Matthew has it as bad as Jon Arbuckle, being the source of a lot of the show's slapstick and is pestered nigh-perpetually by the other characters.
  • Cerebus Syndrome: "Whatever Happened to Victor Virus" took a dark turn with Matthew having a terrible Nightmare where Victor corrupts Matthew, turning him into a virus himself.
  • Comically Missing the Point:
    • Stanley was this during the Halloween special when Matthew got mad at them for the prank.
Stanley: I guess he doesn't like the prank.
    Sid: Oh you think?
    • Zack was this during the Christmas special as well, when the cartoons find out that the Santa who came to their house was just Matthew in a costume.
Stanley: (holding up a receipt for a Santa Claus costume) OH MY GOODNESS!
Zack: I know, medium? That's way too small.
    • Played for drama in the movie where Timmy Tiger said he is not making Lucifer a coat, Tanya responds they're the coats.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Lucifer's death of getting screamed at by Matthew is this especially when he was disintegrated to bones and to nothing.
  • Death of a Child: Subverted in the movie where Timmy thought to be dead, but he actually panicked and pass out and the bullet only got his arm.
  • Despair Event Horizon: In Whatever Happened to Victor Virus, Matthew went through a big one so badly that he hallucinated a photo-negative version of himself telling him to leave the house and abandoned his characters and his own paintings chanting that it's all his fault that Victor is the way he is.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": Don't call his first name, Xavier, as he prefers the name Mr. Scarlet Bird.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: In the Movie, Lucifer Killingsworth tries to off Matthew's most important toons all because he got disqualified in an art contest that took place years prior. This gets Lampshaded by Matthew:
Matthew: Yo-you tried to kill four of my characters all because of a stupid art contest?! You just wanted to win the money.
  • Dude, Not Funny!: In the Christmas special, Matthew finds out that he's completely broke. Wacky Quacky tries to lighten the situation by offering Matthew a penny (as in, the character named Penny). Of course, Matthew does not find Wacky's joke funny.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness:
    • In the earliest episodes, Matthew lived with 200 characters. This was later changed to 320 characters.
    • Wacky Quacky’s earlier appearances had his personality as a more laid-back jokester who tells puns with his shapeshifting ability, a stark contrast compared to his current Cloudcuckoolander characterization today.
  • Failure Montage: In "Handle with Scare", Matthew's characters try to fight a ghost, note  but they end up getting thrown into a closet.
  • Fire-Breathing Diner: Stanley's sandwich as it was made of every pepper ever including mace and lots of hot sauce.
  • From Bad to Worse: In the Christmas special, The tree accidentally burned down due to Matthew panicking, then comes Wacky Quacky getting severely injured after a tree fall on him after Matthew tried to cut it down then after things can't get any worse Professor Qwertyson warned Matthew that Victor's need to be cured right now as his adware flu is fatal.
  • Frozen in Time: In "Countdown", all the clocks in the house stop just a few seconds before New Year's.
  • Fun with Acronyms: N.O.R.M.A.N's name in the reboot which stands for Notably Observent Robotically Monitorial Automated Nuisance.
  • Gone Horribly Right: In "I'm All Ears", Matthew decides to get ears implanted on his head due to forgetting to draw himself with ears. Luckily, the operation turns out to be a success...by way of realizing how loud the house is.
  • Grand Finale: CartoonMania: The Movie concludes the story of how Matthew got a job at the animation department and how he manages to control his anger and stop Lucifer Killingsworth. Bonus points for Matthew reconciling with his friends.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Matthew has a pretty short fuse, though when you live with over 300 cartoon characters who rarely show you any respect, it's not hard to see why he's so bitter. The Movie shows him trying to get it under control.
  • Here We Go Again!:
    • In "Double Conflict", Matthew tires to find a way to let Count Quarterbacula to play football without annoying him. In the end, Matthew is forced to deal with another problem: Anne flooding the house so she can swim.
    • In "Diamond", Matthew ends a day-long dispute between Roy and Otis Johnny Emu by showing them the diamond they were fighting over was a movie prop that is easily breakable. As soon as the argument was quelled, Roy notices a gold bar across the block, prompting the entire house to fight over who should get possession of it.
  • Hypocritical Humor:
    • In Blueprints, Rufus (a disco-dancing horse with a large afro) jokes about the ridiculous hairdo Matthew had when he was younger. When the toons stare at him in bemusement, he acts shocked about the whole ordeal.
    • In "Diamond", Matthew tells Roy and Otis that anger does not solve anything. He ends up getting angry after the two call him out on his hypocrisy.
Matthew: Guys, come on! Anger doesn't solve anything!
Roy and Otis look at him
    Matthew: What?
Otis: You, of all people, are saying that, man?
    Roy: Are you serious, foo?
Matthew: HEY! THIS ISN'T ABOUT ME, THIS IS ABOUT YOU!!
    • In "Sneaking At Night", Quincy claims he would never share the habit with Matthew and his characters on sneaking food... only to sneak a box of crackers shortly after.
    • In the movie Matthew described Lucifer Killingsworth as being very egotistical, Penny points it out by Matthew's self portraits.
  • I Have Your Wife:
    • In Treasure Map, Captain Mcmallard got Victor Virus hostage and threatened to use a feather to tickle him unless Matthew gives him the map.
    • Played for Drama in the Movie where Lucifer Killingsworth pulled this on Matthew by threatening to have his tigers turned into coats if he doesn't give him the ransom, although he was planning on turning them into fur coats anyways even if Matthew gave him the money.
  • Idea Bulb: Deconstructed and Lampshaded in "Handle With Scare", Matthew got a idea on how to celebrate his birthday til he noticed the lightbulb standing up on his head before falling and breaking on him.
  • Immediate Self-Contradiction: In "Acknowledgment", Stanley asks Matthew is he's fine with his show not being represented in the Webtoon Hall of Fame. Matthew assures he is, only for the episode to cut to him crying his eyes out in bed.
  • Instrumental Theme Tune: The opening theme is an instrumental because Matthew Littlemore had trouble writing lyrics for it.
    • A potential musical sequence for the movie was scrapped for the same reason.
  • Intelligible Unintelligible: Donald Trumpet zig-zags this trope. In the show proper, everyone is able to understand his honking. In the Movie, however, he can only be understood by his Translator Buddies, Cornelius and Smitty.
  • It Amused Me: In "Slapstick", Zack's only reason for hitting Matthew with a sledgehammer is "to make the situation more comical".
  • Inkblot Cartoon Style: Among Matthew's toons are a pair of lizards that emulate the rubberhose style. They're Pie-Eyed, have White Gloves, and are Deliberately Monochrome.
  • Knight of Cerebus: After it was revealed the inspector was Matthew's childhood rival Lucifer Killingsworth things get dark real fast when he kidnapped Timmy and Tanya then threatened to turn them into fur coats if Matthew doesn't give him the ransom that he tried cheating for.
  • Lame Comeback: In "Friday the 13th", Matthew tries to prove the titular holiday is a load of baloney. When the toons catch wind of this, this exchange occurs:
Ryan: Matthew, that's kind of a bad idea.
Matthew: Well, that's kind of a bad FACE!
    Ryan: You have horrible comebacks.
  • Left the Background Music On: In the movie, a sad piano tune plays as Matthew reminisces over photos of the Tigers, believing they're as good as dead. It's then revealed Tom Blues is responsible for the music.
  • Limited Animation: Everything is animated in OpenOffice. While impressive in itself, it results in the animation being stilted and many of the gags not working well. The overall art direction is also incredibly flat and simplistic too. However, animation works of the reboot shown that the technique has been improved to some degree, showing a much more smooth rigged animation quality.
  • Living Prop: Just about every character that isn't a part of the main 7 exist just to fill up crowd space. Only a few of them have ever spoken, let alone be the subject of a scene.
  • Living Toys: Among the 300+ toons that roam Matthew's house are a RC car and a matching remote control. Although they have next-to-no screen time, it's safe to assume they're of the good variety.
  • LOL, 69: The house's 69th floor contains some...let's just say, "interesting" things. Upon hearing about this, Matthew has done everything in his power to make sure no one knows the degeneracy that takes place in there with the exception of him, McGee and Wacky Quacky.
  • Manchild: Matthew seems to have shades of this trope. He's been stated to still watch Sesame Street, he keeps a chest full of toys (and swimsuit magazines!) from when he was younger, and one episode implies he still has bedtime stories read to him.
  • My God, What Have I Done?:
    • Matthew's characters after realizing they pranked Matthew on his birthday and are wanting to make up for it.
    • In The Movie, Chompy has this reaction after realizing he was hypnotized in an attempt to murder Penny.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: The Movie's main antagonist is a former schoolmate of Matthew, now returning to kill off his toons. His name? Lucifer Killingsworth.
  • Nice, Mean, and In-Between: Of the Stick Figure brothers, Jimmy is arguably the Nice (he almost never gets into fights with his brothers, and is the most sensible of them), Tommy is the Mean (being a literal Fiery Redhead that is quick to anger), and Henry is the In-Between (he's the one who most often gets picked on by Tommy, but he isn't as irritable as him).
  • Ninja Zombie Pirate Robot: A few of the toons fall under the design philosophy of "throw crap at the wall and then combine them together." Some notable examples are Ed, Fred, Ned and Ted (A bird hydra that just so happens to also be a barbershop quartet), Count Quarterbackula (A football-playing vampire), and Mr. Incredibone (A skeleton superhero).
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: Many of Matthew's characters taken inspiration of popular figures and characters in terms of voice and by name:
  • Non-Human Head:
    • News Anchor has the head of a ship anchor.
    • A few of the chemical element toons also fall under this trope. Iodine has an eye dropper for a head, Silver has a spork, Zirconium has a diamond, Lanthanum has a camera, Osmium has a pen, Cobalt has a magnet, Yttrium has a laser pointer, and Curium and Chlorine have flasks (the former's being an Erlenmeyer and the latter's being a round-bottom).
  • Noodle Incident: Mes Franzer did mentioned something about his wallet being missing.
  • Nothing Is Scarier: The contents of the 69th floor are apparently so messed up, Matthew has made sure nobody but him and a select group of toons know what happens there.
  • Not Hyperbole: Matthew told the Inspector that he had to go to the dentist because of how sweet Penny and Victor's are, he really means it with picture evidence that he showed him.
  • Not-So-Innocent Whistle:
    • In "Glue", Henry whistles as he steps away from a pencil sharper after accidentally spilling glue on the floor.
    • In The Movie, Roland whistles as Matthew asks who is responsible for recording a compilation of him raging over trivial things.
  • Odd Friendship: Despite one having NO INDOOR VOICE and the other being barely audible, Ms. Whisper and Mr. Yellvoice are seemingly good friends.
  • One-Man Band: Wacky Quacky's act in "Auditions" has him transform into a mishmash of instruments to play "Maniac".
  • Orphaned Punchline: Wacky Quacky delivers one during the Halloween Episode.
...And the cake frosting they have at the .99¢ Store? Don't get me started!
  • Out-of-Context Eavesdropping: In "Whatever Happened to Victor Virus?", Victor overhears a conversation where Matthew calls him an accident. Upon realizing how poorly he worded his speech, Matthew tells Victor his existence was intentional, and the "accident" was him becoming a computer virus.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Parodied as Stanley was fooled instantly when Lucifer Killingsworth puts on the mask in front of him.
    *Lucifer puts on a mask*
Stanley: *gasps* MASKED MAN, WHO ARE YOU?!
    *Lucifer takes off the mask*
    Stanley: (gasp) THE INSPECTOR!
    *JoJo does a facepalm*
  • Perennially Overshadowed Birthday: It's revealed in the Halloween special that he was born on Halloween which is lampshaded by Quincy, his birthday was supposed to be on Thanksgiving but his results came too early.
  • Prank Gone Too Far: In the Halloween special, Matthew's characters pulled a prank on him stating there was a real ghost with Mr. Incredibone being the one making the objects float like they were being haunted, although Matthew got so angry and yelled at them because he was scared to death and the fact he was chased by knives, guns, flamethrowers and peanuts, not to mention it was on his birthday.
Matthew: FUNNY?! I WAS SCARED TO DEATH!! I THOUGHT THERE WAS AN ACTUAL GHOST IN THE HOUSE!!! I WAS CHASED BY KNIVES, FLAMETHROWERS, GUNS AND PEANUTS!!! I ALMOST GOT KILLED!!!! AND YOU THINK IT’S FUNNY?!?!?!
  • Pre-Asskicking One-Liner: Matthew gets ready to kick Lucifer's ass in the movie.
Matthew: When I'm done with you, you are gonna wake up in Hell!!
  • Precision F-Strike: Although not in the show proper, in the short "Recognition" (a crossover with Fool Mates), Matthew swears when his toons reveal they stole his credit card to buy FoolMates merch.
Matthew: Where did you even get the money for this stuff?
Wacky Quacky: We did what Richard did.
    Matthew: What are you talking—
(he notices Wacky is holding his credit card)
    Matthew: What the FUCK?!
  • Pun-Based Creature: News Anchor is an Intrepid Reporter with an anchor for a head.
  • Puppy Love: Penny and Victor for millions of reasons.
  • Quantity vs. Quality: Matthew thought if he had a ton of characters, his series will be popular until he realized it's not quantity that makes a series great it's quality.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Upon learning that Timmy was shot to death, Spoiler! Matthew delivers an Overly Long Scream of rage that manages to defeat Lucifer Killingsworth.
  • Real After All: Matthew finally realized and witnessed that Santa Claus is actually real.
  • Ring-Ring-CRUNCH!: Twice in both of the holiday specials where Matthew destroys his alarm clock with a hammer in the Halloween special and with his bare hands in the Christmas special, with him thinking he already destroyed it last time.
  • Self-Defenestration: In the Animated Music Video for "We Built this City", an employee of an unnamed corporation launches himself out of a window upon seeing his company's profits plummet. He survives this, by the way.
  • Silicon Snarker: Norman, the house's robot security system, speaks in a permanently sarcastic tone, and won't miss the opportunity to crack a remark.
  • Species Surname: Pretty much every other animal character has their species as a last name. Just from the main cast, there's Timmy Tiger and Tanya Tigress.
  • Slapstick: Much of the humor in the shorts come from the characters (predominantly Matthew) getting hurt in some way.
  • Sanity Slippage: Matthew lost his mind while trying to find Wacky Quacky in a game of hide and seek while lifting the entire house just to find him.
  • Sentient Vehicle: One of Matthew's 300+ characters is a living train named Ichabod. Strangely, "Slapstick" features a non-sentient engine that looks exactly like him.
  • Skewed Priorities: Matthew giggled when Victor admitted he got the hots for Penny before realizing he shouldn't be laughing during the time they're about to get sucked up into the Earth's core.
  • Sultry Belly Dancer: Alice and Eliza, two very minor characters that live in Matthew's house, emulate this trope as they wear outfits that reveal their midriffs and have exaggerated Hartman Hips.
  • Take That!: In the Halloween special, Matthew thanks Donald Trumpet for making a wise decision, unlike the guy that served as his namesake.
  • Toothy Bird: Most of the bird characters are like this.
  • Torches and Pitchforks: Despite losing their trust in him, Matthew manages to get every single one of his creations to form a torch-wielding mob to storm the factory where Lucifer Killingsworth is keeping the Tiger twins hostage in the movie.
  • Twister Game Hijinks: In "Twister", Matthew and his main toons play a game of Twister for game night. Considering how he's playing against six other people (one of which doesn't even have feet), it goes very wrong. In the end, Matthew twists his spine and sprains his wrist after getting Left Hand Green.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: Wacky Quacky shapeshifts spontaneously whether he cracks a joke.
  • Wham Episode: In "Whatever Happened to Victor Virus", it was revealed that Victor wasn't meant to be a virus as it was a accident after Matthew downloaded a virus by mistake.
  • Wham Line: Matthew realizing that the Inspector was the imposter who tried to kill his characters after finding the note in his pocket.
    Matthew: How to install...ANTI VIRUS?!
  • What the Hell, Hero?: In the movie, Matthew decides to let the Big Bad, Lucifer Killingsworth, to leave the house after attempting to off Matthew's most important toons. In response, the entire house shuns Matthew, believing he now values his new job over the lives of his own creations.
  • World of Jerkass: Nearly everyone in the show is an annoying, argumentative, destructive jerk, even Matthew Littlemore, the protagonist, is a total asshole to be around most of the time. The ones that are consistently nice can be counted on one hand. Despite this, most of the characters have shown on more than one occasion that they do genuinely care about each other in spite of being pricks on a near-daily basis.
  • Xanatos Gambit: Lucifer's plan in the movie is one of these. Specifically, he kidnaps Timmy and Tanya and holds them for a price. If Matthew fails to give the ransom money, the tigers will be skinned and made into coats. If Matthew does, then he'll be shot, the tigers will be skinned regardless, and the house will be bombed, killing everyone inside.

Matthew and his toons play a game of Twister, which goes horribly wrong as Matthew sprains his arm.

How well does it match the trope?
