[spits] [closes laptop] "Son, you've got to know one thing. It's not just shoveling tweets and posts out here. You've got to know the difference between being a working man and a company man. They ain't the same. You'll see."

Cormorants. They're not pretty. They're not chill. Objectively, their nests produce some of the worst smells I've ever experienced. But they keep Mille Lacs clean, and we should help them. Despite the odors, one of my favorite columns of late:
A juvenile cormorant prepares to fledge from its nest upon Spirit Island in Lake Mille Lacs in central Minnesota on Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2026. The island is a protected wildlife reserve and requires annual cleaning to remove dangerous garbage recovered by cormorants from the bottom of the lake.

I get it. The new Blatnik Bridge between Duluth & Superior will be expensive & mess up traffic for years. Some imagined a more futuristic or stone-built masterpiece. But this new bridge is necessary and, when you look at the details, a good deal.
Commuters cross the current Blatnik Bridge that connects Duluth and Superior, Wis., on Jan. 15, 2020.

North central Minnesota is in a storage drought, a persistent state of below-average rainfall that affects groundwater. It means low rivers and lakes, and possibly dry wells. Even in Lakes Country, access to water cannot be taken for granted.

As Sen. Amy Klobuchar seeks to become Minnesota's first female governor, her special relationship with the Iron Range will be tested.
An Amy Klobuchar supporter wears a t-shirt with her name on it at the senator's primary election night party in 2026.
