What if farmers could detect crop stress before it becomes visible? Mycovolt Technologies is working to decode the electrical signals plants send in response to changes in their environment. With a £2.3m ARIA seed boost, they'll test whether those signals can be captured and categorised at field scale. If successful, this could help growers spot pests, disease, and other threats more quickly, supporting more targeted interventions + reducing unnecessary inputs. We’re hiring for two amazing opportunities in novel compute at ARIA: → Scaling Inference Lab Director — lead the next phase of our effort to turn breakthrough AI hardware into credible, working systems. https://lnkd.in/eTthdXTU → Programme Directors — we’re particularly keen to hear from people with ambitious ideas for what computing ought to become next. https://lnkd.in/eXRidWUk Novel compute is moving incredibly fast. The bottleneck is shifting from inventing better components to proving they can work in complete systems, at meaningful scale, in front of the customers, investors and operators who can help them succeed. That’s what the Scaling Inference Lab is designed to do — and why we’re doubling down. If you want to help build the future of compute, take a look. Last month, Venture Café Edinburgh welcomed the Advanced Research + Invention Agency (ARIA) to our weekly Thursday Gathering as part of their visit to Scotland, where they engaged with research communities around the country. We were joined by ARIA’s CEO Kathleen Fisher in an evening dedicated to deep-tech, innovation, and research at the frontier of what’s possible. Being an ARIA Activation Partner enables us to connect the science and technology research excellence Scotland has to offer with the rest of the UK, empowering talent and supporting science translation across ARIA’s opportunity spaces. Working closely with local partners such as the Edinburgh Futures Institute, The University of Edinburgh, and the Bayes Centre allows us to be at the heart of the Innovation community in Edinburgh, creating space for innovators, entrepreneurs, researchers, and enthusiasts to connect every week. At Venture Café we believe that isolation is the enemy of innovation, and that’s why our mission ito connect innovators of all kinds is so important. Together we can ensure that science, technology and ideas can be translated into impact. 🎥 GLO Claudia | Arielle | Nikol | Joana | Venture Café Global Institute Mike Jackson Nathan Plummer Kristen Plymale Hytham Bakir Andreas Stillman Fraser Macdonald Vaishak Belle Carrie Cowley

AI-enabled cyber attacks are getting faster + going further. But what if AI-enabled formal methods could make high-assurance cyber defence practical at unprecedented speed and scale? To test that idea, we’re backing eight new research projects with £22m as part of the Safeguarded AI programme, led by Nora Ammann. The projects will target systems where machine-checked correctness would yield outsized, widespread resilience gains, from containing AI agents to protecting the code on millions of Android devices, whilst building durable UK capability at the intersection of formal methods and AI. Six blue teams and one opportunity seed team will build production-grade software and hardware components carrying machine-checked proofs, whilst an independent central red team attempts to break the full assurance case behind their security claims. Success could bring provable security to some of the world's most widely relied-upon software and hardware. Meet the teams: https://lnkd.in/e3fzJb9g

Thank you to everyone who joined us last night to introduce our new Activation Partners. It was brilliant to bring together the people helping ambitious research move from the lab towards real-world use: our new partners, Creators, Programme Directors and colleagues from across the ecosystem. Welcome again to Adaptyv, BioInnovation Institute (BII), Edinburgh Genome Foundry, Newlab and Open Athena. We’re looking forward to what we can make possible together.

Great to see His Majesty visiting Hypanode in Aberdeen, Scotland, and delighted to be funding this strong team. Read more (link in comments) about Advanced Research + Invention Agency (ARIA)’s Enduring Atmospheric Platforms programme - our goal is to develop aircraft that can provide connectivity from the stratosphere.
We were honoured to meet His Majesty The King at Energy Transition Zone Ltd EnergyWorks yesterday as he marked the official opening of the facility. Hypanode is one of the first businesses based at EnergyWorks, where we are developing a new power system for aviation and moving the technology towards real-world demonstration and commercial scale. That work received a major boost last week with the announcement of a £9m contract through Advanced Research + Invention Agency (ARIA)’s Enduring Atmospheric Platforms programme. During the visit, our co-founder Ben Haberman, Head of Operations, Fiona Landy and myself showed His Majesty some of our work and explained why the depth of engineering expertise in Aberdeen was a major factor in our decision to build the business here. EnergyWorks gives us the space and support to develop the technology and take the next step towards market. Maarten Verbraeken and Duncan Nowicki, both off camera, made the beautiful components being shown to His Majesty. Thanks also to Gareth Bourne for helping bring in investment and to all the investors and other inspiring people who support our work!

We’re excited to announce that we've been selected as one of ARIA's new Activation Partners. Open Athena’s mission is to accelerate research with artificial intelligence from the frontier, and ARIA’s Creators are exactly the kind of expert, curious, and ambitious researchers that we exist to serve. Through partnering our engineers with ARIA-funded research teams we will build open scientific models, datasets and benchmarks. We’re looking forward to helping researchers use frontier AI capabilities on the scientific questions that matter most. https://lnkd.in/gU54DtVb
What becomes possible when the teams pursuing science at the edge of possible can draw on an AI-native lab, frontier scientific software, and expert manufacturers, investors, and founders? Today, we're announcing our five new Activation Partners, bringing world-class engineering, AI in Science, and translation capabilities to the UK and directly into our opportunity spaces, to propel ambitious research into real world capabilities. We fund high-risk, high-reward research at the edge of what’s scientifically possible. But the hardest ideas need more than funding to become real: they need the right people, tools, facilities, and routes out into the world. That is what our Activation Partners are here to provide. We are delighted to announce that our five new partners are: → Adaptyv will build one of the UK's first AI-native biology labs, taking Creators from computer-generated protein design to real-world results in weeks. → Edinburgh Genome Foundry will add AI-enabled capabilities to its automated engineering biology platform. → Open Athena will embed engineers within Creator teams to build open, frontier computational tools, from designing new proteins to modelling the climate. → Newlab will build a UK translation platform connecting Creators to manufacturers, testbeds, industry partners, and investors. → BioInnovation Institute (BII) will open its network of investors and mentors to Creators across our human and planetary health programmes. Our founding partners showed what can happen when researchers are surrounded by the right support from day one. This new group takes that further, opening up new ways to conduct science, test ideas, and build the capabilities that could carry them beyond the lab – all of it delivered in the UK, with international partners standing up entities and hiring teams here to deliver their activities. I am excited to share that BioInnovation Institute (BII) has been selected as an Advanced Research + Invention Agency (ARIA) Activation Partner. ARIA is the UK's boldest science funder, backing ambitious research that others consider too risky or too counterintuitive to touch. From programmable plants to systems-scale medicine, ARIA funds breakthroughs that could redefine what is possible. BII recently established its UK hub in Victoria House in London to run the CardioMetabolic Bridge initiative. Through the partnership with ARIA, BII will expand the activities in UK at real scale, supporting a broader base of UK researchers and helping more academics make the leap from ideas to fundable companies. The partnership connects BII into ARIA's exceptional UK network and scientific talent, and lets us work alongside ARIA's dedicated, field-expert Programme Directors in areas that align closely with BII's own strengths, including planetary health, neuroscience and immunology. Since 2018, BII has helped build more than 160 life-science startups that collectively have raised more than 1.2b EUR. Now we are bringing this experience to the UK to help more brilliant science become the companies of the future. https://lnkd.in/ec9mAC3F Lars Grønlykke Christian RankJohanna Roostalu Trine Bartholdy Markus Herrgård Christian Brix Tillegreen Anne Almind Vind Karolina Zapadka, PhD MBAEleonora LugaràTony Cheng-Fu Chang Jens Nielsen Pui Ling Lau Lasse Juul Jakobsen Pranay Shah
