About us
Born from innovation, Burberry is a global luxury brand with a rich British heritage. Now celebrating our 170th year, we continue to build on the pioneering spirit that has defined us since 1856. Founded by Thomas Burberry, our brand is underpinned by a passion for the outdoors. Thomas Burberry invented the innovative rain-ready fabric gabardine to protect explorers from the elements. In doing so, he created the foundation for the iconic Burberry trench coat, which remains core to the business even today. Guided by our history of exploration and our shared belief that ‘creativity opens spaces’, our purpose is to unlock the power of imagination to push boundaries and open new possibilities for our people, our customers and our communities. As a values-driven brand, we are committed to creating the next generation of sustainable luxury and believe that diversity, equity and inclusion are essential to fulfilling our purpose. Fostering an inclusive culture where differences are valued and embraced enables us to be more creative, engaged and make a more meaningful contribution to the world around us. Introducing ‘170: The Anniversary Portraits’, a new campaign celebrating 170 years of Burberry through our signature outerwear. The British weather influenced our founder Thomas Burberry from the very beginning, inspiring an approach to outerwear rooted in protection and purpose. From everyday life to pioneering expeditions, outerwear has remained at the heart of our story. Functional by design, it has become deeply personal across generations. ‘For 170 years, our outerwear has adapted to the weather and the way we dress,’ says Chief Creative Officer Daniel Lee. ‘Each portrait is different, but together they capture individuality and self-expression.’ Photographed by Jack Day, with a film directed by Hector Aponysus, ‘170: The Anniversary Portraits’ brings together 170 individuals across London, New York, Seoul and Shanghai, offering unique perspectives on ten Burberry outerwear styles. The Burberry Summer 2027 Runway show was staged at Chelsea College of Arts (UAL). The set design is deliberately exposing. Against this restraint, the collection read as human rather than perfect – soulful and tactile. Wooden seating brings warmth into the white space, as does the soundtrack, drawn from four decades of music by David Bowie – a British artist whose music always managed to find the ‘humanity in the experiment’, says Daniel Lee, Burberry’s Chief Creative Officer. Burberry Summer 2027 is a celebration of British eccentricity. Rainwear is engineered for a sense of lightness, with ruched silk trenches creating a parachute-like volume. Richly textured outerwear and separates introduce new proposals of matelassé stitching in lightweight leather, brought to life in a constellation of craft, skill and technique. Introducing Burberry Summer 2027. Burberry at its most soulful. Running across the collection is Celia Birtwell, the British textile artist whose prints defined the look of the 1960s and 1970s. Where Burberry’s language is typically graphic, Birtwell’s drawings bring a sense of joy. Through her eyes, the House Check resolves into gingham, reduced still further into a stripe. Faces and florals disrupt traditional codes. ‘You can really feel the human hand in it. In the check, in the lines’ says Daniel Lee, Burberry’s Chief Creative Officer. 170 years of Burberry, told through an icon. ‘The Burberry Trench: Crafting an Icon’ traces a long-standing relationship between two institutions with a shared commitment to ensuring their heritage and collections inspire the next generations of creatives. For Carly Eck, Brand Curator, Burberry, the display is an opportunity to share pieces from the Burberry Archive with the public for the first time: ‘In this special display, a myriad of objects from the brand’s Archive will be publicly exhibited for the first time – from early 20th-century catalogues to a Burberry trench coat worn by fashion designer Hardy Amies.’ Bringing these pieces together for the display, Oriole Cullen, Senior Curator, Fashion and Textiles at the V&A, said: ‘In advance of the V&A and Burberry partnership on the forthcoming Fashion Gallery, we are delighted to work with the Burberry Archive to showcase the history of the celebrated trench coat: a British fashion staple that has stood the test of time and continues to evolve over a century on.’ The display is free and open to all at V&A South Kensington until 3 January 2027.
