A global movement of people who won't live with poverty.

About us

Oxfam is a vibrant global movement of dedicated people fighting poverty - together. Oxfam fights poverty in three ways: Campaigning, Development and Emergency Response. Campaigning for change: Poverty isn’t just about lack of resources. In a wealthy world it’s about bad decisions made by powerful people. Oxfam campaigns hard, putting pressure on leaders for real lasting change. Development work: Poor people can take control, solve their own problems, and rely on themselves – with the right support. Fighting poverty, we fund long-term work worldwide. Emergency response: People need help in an emergency – fast. We save lives, swiftly delivering aid, support and protection; and we help people prepare for future crises. Oxfam also has around 670 shops in the UK and an online shop selling over 100,000 volunteer-listed second-hand clothes, books, music and collectables, plus Fairtrade and ethical gifts: http://www.oxfam.org.uk/shop Interested in working for Oxfam? Amazing to see 10 women’s rights organisations come together and share learning about the impact of flexible funding through the Women’s Rights Fund.  The Women’s Rights Fund provides 3-year, flexible funding to community organisations so they can invest in their own priorities. Our partners work on a range of issues, including emergency aid, support to survivors of violence, access to healthcare and women’s political participation.   Find out more: https://lnkd.in/e3CKx5mp ELEVATE HER, Desire Youth Initiative, Restoring Dignity Foundation (RDF), Mombasa Young Mothers CBO, WETEC Kenya, CDTD, Centre for Domestic Training and Development Kenya., Badili Africa, Association of Women in Agriculture, Kenya (AWAK), Association For Women in Energy and Extractives in Kenya (AWEIK) Mona Mehta, Beatriz Guimaraes Jacquie Migide, Fredrick Otieno Purity Jebor Anthony Irungu, Annvera Kananu, Chama Nshindano Mwandalesa

Ten women's rights organisations. Two cities. One thing they share: the women running them decide what their communities need, and the funding follows. Four of them no longer receive funding from the Women's Rights Fund. They came to our convening anyway. Badili Africa, the Association of Women in Agriculture, Kenya (AWAK), the Association For Women in Energy and Extractives in Kenya (AWEIK), and Indigenous Resource Management Organization. The funding ended; the work didn't. That is what the Women's Rights Fund is built to do; hand over flexible money and the power to decide how it is spent, then let organisations outgrow you. Most funding does the opposite. It arrives tied to activities someone else designed, on timelines someone else set, and it leaves organisations weaker than it found them. good at reporting, thin on everything else. Last week took us to Nairobi and Mombasa. We met women who survived violence and now run the services that catch the next woman. Grandmothers. Young mothers finishing school with babies on their hips. Women farming, mining, organising. Then two days in one room on safe programming and gender transformative approaches. What works, what is hard, what nobody has figured out yet. We finished at Mombasa Young Mothers' fourth anniversary, watching students graduate. Trust the organisations. Fund them properly. Get out of the way. Across the week: ELEVATE HER, Desire Youth Initiative, Restoring Dignity Foundation (RDF), Mombasa Young Mothers CBO, WETEC Kenya, @Build and Elighten Communities Initiative, CDTD, Centre for Domestic Training and Development Kenya. Too often we’re told that poverty and inequality is inevitable. They aren’t. Poverty is shaped by the way our society is organised. We live in an unequal system, one where power and opportunity is concentrated in the hands of the few while others are held back. Anti-Blackness is racism that specifically impacts black people. It happens because of a belief that some lives matter more than others. That belief shapes systems, institutions and decisions, causing poverty and inequality to thrive. That's why we can't fight poverty without fighting anti-Black racism. This Black History Month, we're standing for a future where every life is valued equally and everyone has the chance to thrive. Share this post if you believe in building a better future. #BlackHistoryMonth #BHM #AntiBlackness #RacialJustice

    • We can’t fight poverty without fighting anti-Black racism.

Global poverty isn't an accident: centuries of anti-Black racism have helped create it. But if people created it - people can change it.

The water needed to make new clothes is pretty mind-blowing. Just one T-shirt requires 2,700 litres. In the face of the climate crisis, that water could otherwise be used to drink, cook and stay safe from disease. Already this year, items you've donated to Oxfam have been reused or recycled saving billions of litres of water. Thanks for giving clothes a second life, avoiding waste, and supporting people facing climate crisis. 🌍 #SecondHandSeptember

#SecondHandSeptember is all about keeping clothing in use for as long as possible, as this is one of the most effective ways to reduce fashion’s impact on our planet. 🌍♻️ But we also urgently need better solutions for textiles that can no longer be worn or reused. The Circuit aims to close that gap. The Circuit launched yesterday as a new collaborative model designed to find new ways to recover and recycle textiles at scale. We’re proud to be part of this, building on our long history of textile recovery and our work at our Batley warehouse. Our new State of Style report found that 1/5 of unwanted clothes are ending up in general waste. We now need to turn collaboration into solutions that keep textiles in use for longer – and find better ways to recover what can’t be reused. If you're a retailer or recycler interested in getting involved, find more information about The Circuit here ➡️ https://lnkd.in/ehjPVSQJ And read Oxfam's State of Style here ➡️ https://bit.ly/3VdMUED Marks and Spencer, Sainsbury's, New Look, Circle8

Campaigners presented today at the UN over 2 million signatures from global petitions calling for governments to “make polluters pay”. The handover follows a season of record wildfires in Europe and North America, deadly floods and storms across South Asia and the Pacific, and a glacier collapse in Nepal – alongside US$700 billion in economic losses linked to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. The “Make Polluters Pay” coalition is calling for binding measures, such as climate damages taxes, permanent taxes on fossil fuel profits, and fines, with revenue directed to adaptation, recovery, loss and damage, and the energy transition. There is no serious conversation about security or resilience while economies stay exposed to volatile fossil fuel markets and communities carry the costs alone. This is how we protect future generations and take the profit out of destruction, rather than lining the pockets of wealthy shareholders. Millions have already spoken. Now it's time for world leaders to act: make polluters pay. #MakePollutersPay #ClimateCrisis Greenpeace International 350.org Oxfam International Make Polluters Pay UK
