Charlie Toon liked thisCharlie Toon liked thisSomething light hearted as it's half way through the week - The Great British Bake Off. If yesterday's episode showed us anything it's that no amount of planning can prepare you and I know this because I was in that tent about 15 years ago. You can prepare. You can practise. You can have a plan. But then suddenly there's a spanner in the works or rather chocolate melting all over the floor and life takes a different turn. It’s not that different from corporate life really is it? We spend a huge amount of time planning, forecasting, preparing presentations, managing risk and trying to anticipate what might happen. And, of course, there is much value in all of that. But some of the most interesting things can happen when the plan changes. A conversation takes an unexpected turn. A problem forces you to think differently. An opportunity appears that wasn’t in the strategy. Someone says yes when you expected a no. That's when the magic happens. I wrote a little about this and my journey into that tent. https://lnkd.in/eEEYRZ8fBite #10 - Great British Bake Off memories and musings on spontaneityBite #10 - Great British Bake Off memories and musings on spontaneity

Charlie Toon reacted on thisCharlie Toon reacted on thisMy grandmother lived to 107. She went from suffrage to social media and never once said "rizz". She'd have had no idea what "blue-sky thinking" meant either, and would have told you so, bluntly, probably over a cup of tea (served from a pot, obviously). A new survey out this month from Fortune.com (link in comments) carries a headline that shouldn't surprise anyone who has ever managed a team: Gen Z can't communicate with their boss. 80% of Gen Z say generational language is a real problem at work. Only 30% of boomers agree. Keep reading the same survey, however, and the real nuance is in the detail. Boomers stumped by "delulu", "rizz" and "no cap". Gen Z equally stumped by "boil the ocean" and "blue-sky thinking", three quarters of them drawing a blank on both. Nobody in this so-called crisis is fluent in the other's dialect, and everyone appears to be guessing. That 80/30 split is exactly what I call the generational assumption tax: paid by default, usually without noticing, whenever you, and your bias, decide someone else's confusion is a character flaw rather than a different dialect. Utterly unsurprisingly, the people with less power in the room feel this most, because they have no choice, and the people with more power rarely do, because they've never had to. And this isn't even a new tax. Business has been paying it for years: back in 2022, YouGov found that 44% of workers said communication friction like this had already delayed a project, and 52% said it added stress nobody signed up for. That's a performance problem, not a generational one, and it isn't going away on its own. Now, a fancy online glossary of company slang won't fix it. What's fundamentally missing is something my grandmother, Harriet, practised her whole life: a bit of reflective empathy. "Everyone likes to be asked for their advice," she used to say. It's one of five ideas behind the Rhabdomancy H.U.M.A.N. framework, and this survey is basically begging for it. Because it turns out nobody has actually asked what our colleagues need to thrive when communication is breaking down. We used to teach workplace tone by osmosis: sitting near a manager, watching them soften a message before it went out, catching the shift between a quick reply to a mate and a careful one to a client. Several years of remote-first onboarding, and infinite channel choice at work, have quietly closed that classroom. Nobody meant to. It just stopped happening near anyone. The solution, though, is painfully simple. Stop grading your newest hires on a code nobody taught them. Start teaching it on purpose. Pair people up, mentor and monitor. Ask what they don't know instead of assuming they should already know it. Model the shift out loud, and live it. Harriet went from a world without the vote to one with Instagram, and never once assumed the distance between her and another person was someone's fault.

Charlie Toon reacted on thisI’m delighted to share that I’ve had a very warm welcome from my new colleagues at Inspiring Vet Care today as I start my new role as Head of Marketing (Pet Health Club). I’m joining at a really exciting time and I can’t wait to get stuck in, meet more of the team and help shape what comes next. And for those who haven’t seen it yet, I’d definitely recommend watching ITV's The Joy of Pets, a new primetime series delivered in partnership with Inspiring Vet Care, it's been great to watch in the lead up to today as an introduction to my new world! Here’s to a new chapter 🐾 And, of course, a picture with my dog Milly for the algorithm.

Charlie Toon reacted on thisCharlie Toon reacted on thisDoing what you do cos you like it. At its heart, I got into intergenerational diversity and workplace communication to help people. Why? because I love it. ❤️ No grand plan, no 6 figure exit in 5years (gosh wouldn't that be novel) Just a goal to share some timeless team wisdom and help managers look past their preconceived generation stereotypes and build some proper connections. Seems simple, but in reality it's hard graft at times, lonely often, and regularly frustrating when trying to build a business solo. So it was absolutely wonderful and life affirming to catch up with a group of ex-colleagues and now closed friends yesterday and hear so many lovely words of encouragement to "keep on, keeping on" trust me I will, and who knows, maybe that multi-billion pound exit isn't that far off! Big love to the Nottfielders (IYKYK) 😊

Charlie Toon reacted on thisIt’s my last few days at Circle Health Group after 2.5 years and I’m feeling all the feels right now! I’ve loved my time here, I’ve had the privilege of leading a brilliant team of 13 and to say I’m proud of what we’ve achieved would be an understatement. We’ve driven growth in digital channel performance, rolled out campaigns and put strong central marketing plans in place, improved ways of working, communication, governance and processes (hello marketing T&Cs!) and smashed targets for trackable revenue from paid search. On a more personal level I’m very proud of completing the leadership programme at LJMU and winning two awards for my Capstone Project, improving our team’s employee engagement score by two stars and launching a new series of movement classes, an initiative to drive data capture. I’d like to say a big thank you to my wonderful team, not just for a lovely send off but for your hard work and resilience and for making coming to work a pleasure. And thank you to colleagues from across the business and at our agency partners, too many of you to mention! After a short break, I’ll be starting an exciting new role in a couple of weeks – update pending 🐾 Anja Wojcik Lauren Swankie Adam Flowers Hannah Lewis Vanessa Machado Olivo Jada Heron Georgia Mckenzie Kyle Smith Amy White Federica Gulotta Whiteside Samir Patel Kelly Waters Sam Lock Darren Smith Matthew Graham-Clare MBA Helen Cosgrove Rubal A.

We’re proud to announce a new national diagnostics partnership between Perspectum and InHealth, a collaboration that will expand access to advanced MRI and significantly boost capacity at the Oxford Community Diagnostic Centre. With enhanced facilities opening in July 2026, Oxfordshire residents and self-pay patients will benefit from faster access to a broader range of MRI assessments, helping reduce waiting times and bring high-quality diagnostics closer to home. This partnership will also extend advanced MRI services across InHealth’s national network and establish a joint research network, enabling large-scale multicentre studies such as UKIDS.
