Erin Bayliss shared thisLast week I took my first week off this year. And it's not something I’m particularly proud of. But it turns out, even when you're a one-woman band, the business doesn't collapse the moment you step away. So who knows, next year I might even manage two weeks. (Okay, maybe I’m getting ahead of myself)

Erin Bayliss shared thisNorwich and Norfolk self-employed ladies… It’s been a hot second since our last SelfEm Social event, but after the success of our very first event, Denni and I have put together another Paint and Sip evening 🖌️🍸 I can’t promise you’ll leave with a masterpiece, but I can promise wholesome chats and no awkward icebreaker questions. I’ll pop the ticket link in the comments 🎟️

Erin Bayliss shared thisSocial media is basically a recycling centre. Sorry, but someone had to say it 🤷🏻♀️ WTF this. Kinda chic that. Don't get me wrong, I love a trend. They’re (usually) pretty low-effort, and if you jump on one at the right time, they can perform amazingly. But reach isn’t the only thing that matters. What does the trend actually tell people about your brand? Does it show your personality? Does it give your audience something useful? Does it make them remember you? Or are you posting it simply because everyone else is? The problem with relying too heavily on trends is that sooner or later, your content starts looking like everyone else’s. And worse, your audience won’t be able to tell you apart from your competitors. Use trends. Have fun with them. Take the reach. But don't forget to give people a reason to remember who posted it.

Erin Bayliss shared this28k views for a single-take reel. No fancy edit. No huge production. Just a different POV. The best social media content just needs a little creativity and the confidence to try something that might look a bit weird from the outside 😅 My hot take 🌶️: Never underestimate the power of switching up the POV when it comes to social media content!

Erin Bayliss shared thisControversial things I do as a social media freelancer: →I don’t tie clients into long contracts After the initial onboarding period, my clients aren’t locked in. I want to work with people who are still excited and motivated to work together, not people who are just waiting until they can hand in their notice. →I don’t charge extra for my ideas My ideas are part of the package. If I think of something that could help a client (social media-related or not) I’ll share it. Monetising every part of my business would take the fun out of it for me. → I haven’t niched…and I probably never will One of my favourite parts of the job is getting to work with completely different businesses. Every brand deserves its own approach. I don’t think copy-and-paste social media is worthwhile for anyone. →I post content manually My goal isn’t to systemise my clients’ social media so I can work less. I treat every brand as though I’m part of the in-house team, not as another account being pushed through an automated content machine. →I don’t spend every second of the day on social media My best ideas normally come when I’m offline… On a walk, exploring a new city or actually talking to people. →I won’t promise a direct return from organic social Of course we can track the stats. But if your main priority is attributing every single pound directly and immediately, organic social probably isn’t the right route for you. A lot of organic social just isn’t that easy to put into numbers.

Erin Bayliss shared thisAs a freelance social media manager, it’s very easy to become queen of behind the scenes… Managing socials, filming content, editing content, brainstorming ideas, planning shoots, writing captions… I could go on 😅 And while I love that side of what I do, I’d also love to spend a bit more time actually talking to people. Business owners, marketers, creatives… anyone who wants to bounce around ideas, get a fresh pair of eyes on their socials, or figure out what they could finally take off their plate. If you fancy a chat about anything social, you can book a 30-minute call with me here 👉 https://lnkd.in/ePAxGrm2

Erin Bayliss shared thisI took the bank holiday off… but my content didn’t. Over the bank holiday weekend, 1 post generated 206 follows, and 71 bio link clicks (and counting). Don’t get me wrong, these numbers are lovely. But knowing that my content can keep working for my clients, even when I’m not, is the best result for me. Consistency doesn’t mean being glued to your phone or posting for the sake of posting. Sometimes the best thing you can do for your business is create the right content, then log off and enjoy the weekend.

Erin Bayliss liked thisErin Bayliss liked thisThings I pay for as a freelancer... Website hosting The tax man Mitchell, my accountant Insurance Various subscriptions Networking events But also... A random Tuesday morning off when I feel like it. Working from a cafe instead of my desk. Trips without having to count my annual leave days. More control over who I work with, what I work on and when I do it. The freedom to build my work around my life, rather than squeezing my life around my work. There are plenty of expenses that come with running your own business. But almost two years in, I’m pretty happy with what I’m paying for 🤭

Erin Bayliss liked thisErin Bayliss liked thisMy unread whatsapp messages are never less than 100. I get no more than 5 hours of sleep on a good night. I’ve not seen a regular gym floor for 3 years. I have a to-do list that increases faster than I can tick things off. Everyone says to me “Izzy, I don’t know how you do it all”. The answer is, i’m doing none of it excellently. Some of it is decent. Most of it is scrappy and not the standard I like to put my name to. But that’s literally the point. I don’t do it all, I don’t want it all, but i’m currently working like i don’t have children and raising children like i don’t have to work and maintaining friendships like I don't have a job or kids! It’s not actually possible to do it all, I'm failing at so many things, more than anything i’m failing myself when it comes to self care and good habits. But I am where I am right now. And despite all of that, I'm happy where my feet are. Reasons and seasons baby. Sharing this in case you’re feeling the same kinda way!

Erin Bayliss liked thisErin Bayliss liked thisMost architecture films show stunning spaces with no one in them. Shot so wide you can't feel the scale. Beautiful, but hard to imagine anyone living there. So we flipped it. We filmed this self-build as a lived-in home. Making coffee. Talking round the table. Working from home. Each moment lets a potential client see, and feel, the kind of places you create. 🙌🏽 PS. Those aren't actors. They're the people who live there. If you've got a project that deserves more than an empty wide shot, let's talk.

Erin Bayliss liked thisErin Bayliss liked thisOne of the things I'm proudest of at &Allies is our staff retention. This week we're celebrating two team members hitting five years with us, and next month one of the team reaches six years. Most of the team have now been with us for over four years. To put that in context, the latest IPA Agency Census shows UK agency staff turnover running at nearly 25% a year, so roughly one in four people move on every twelve months, and overall retention has dropped to under 70%. I've always believed in looking after & trusting your people and taking the time to employ 'right'. It's always a gamble, but Laura and I nailed it with our team and their longevity is testament to that. The best thing is that they teach me something every day. They lead the charge, they aren't afraid to positively challenge, and we have fun along the way. They put their colleagues first and always have our clients' best interests at heart. I couldn't ask for a better bunch.

Your paid social campaigns are running. But who's actually looking after them? There's a big difference between keeping campaigns live and actively managing them for performance. Testing creative. Reviewing audiences. Optimising budgets. Understanding what's driving enquiries and sales. When paid social is just one of several responsibilities sitting with an already stretched marketing team, it's easy for those things to slip. That's not necessarily a reason to outsource everything. But it might be a reason to rethink how you're managing it. So, a question for marketing leaders: is paid social getting the attention it needs in your business? Are you managing it in-house, outsourcing it, or using a combination of both? We'd love to hear what's working for you. And if you're questioning whether your current setup is working as hard as it could, we'd be happy to talk through your options. 👉 https://lnkd.in/ddu_w46m #PaidSocial #MarketingStrategy #DigitalMarketing #MitchellAndStones

I genuinely don’t think Marketing Managers get enough credit. You’re often expected to: Be part strategist. Part content creator. Part SEO specialist. Part PPC expert. Part analyst. Part brand guardian. Part CRM lead. Part revenue driver. All at once. Usually with: A modest budget. Ambitious growth targets. And leadership asking, “Can we just get more leads?” Somewhere along the way, marketing became the function that’s meant to “make it happen”. More demand. Better quality. Lower cost. Higher conversion. Stronger brand. Preferably by next quarter. However, marketing is a system. It needs: Strategy. Budget aligned to ambition. Clear sales processes. Proper tools. Leadership buy-in. Not just one very capable person trying to spin every plate. If you’re a Marketing Manager feeling stretched, it’s probably not a capability issue. It’s a structure issue. And if you’re in leadership… Growth targets and marketing investment need to have a relationship. You can’t expect Premier League results on Sunday League resources. Marketing Managers, you’re doing more than most people realise. What’s the one thing you wish your leadership team understood about your role? 👇
