Hans Balgobin shared thisWhat if we could take computing that today needs megawatts and push it towards watts? What if a meaningful slice of a data centre could eventually fit in your pocket? That is the scale of the promise that came up when I went back to UCL recently to meet Tony Kenyon, my old Electronic Engineering professor, to talk about neuromorphic computing. The attraction is not simply that it is “brain-like”. It is that it challenges some of the basic assumptions of modern computing. In a von Neumann architecture, enormous amounts of energy are spent moving data between memory and compute. Neuromorphic architectures instead push towards local memory, local computation, asynchronous processing and sparsity — doing work only where something actually changes. That resonated with an instinct I have had since my early days in quantitative finance: why “boil the sea” with enormous matrix multiplications if useful answers can sometimes emerge from local interactions and nearest-neighbour behaviour? Transformers made this even more interesting. Attention gives software the ability to decide dynamically what matters. Neuromorphic hardware raises the possibility of pushing that idea down into the physics itself — what Tony described as “computing with physics.” An event camera is a beautiful example. Instead of repeatedly transmitting complete images, individual pixels report only meaningful changes. The sensor itself decides what deserves attention. So the deeper question is: Can attention, sparsity and decentralised computation become physical properties of our computers, rather than techniques we simulate in software? We also discussed spiking neural networks, memristive devices, quantum computing, non-linearity, and the analogy between decentralised compute and markets as decentralised information-processing systems. The ultimate prize is energy efficiency. The human brain operates at roughly 20W. Our current AI trajectory increasingly relies on data centres consuming megawatts of power. If neuromorphic computing can close even part of that architectural gap, perhaps the future question is not: “How many more data centres do we need?” but: “How much of the data centre can we put in your pocket?” I wrote up the longer piece in the shared article if you are interested, including why I think neuromorphic computing deserves far more research, capital and attention :) Anthony Kenyon NeuroWare - the UK Innovation & Knowledge Centre in Neuromorphic ComputingNeuromorphic Architectures: The Huge Potential ImplicationsNeuromorphic Architectures: The Huge Potential ImplicationsHans Balgobin

Hans Balgobin shared thisThere is something a bit weirdly Cassandra-ish about rereading my 2023 piece on AI swarms now. The argument then was basically that we were probably thinking about alignment at the wrong level. We were focusing on whether an individual AI was aligned, when the more interesting problem might emerge once lots of individually capable systems start interacting, communicating, competing, copying one another and developing persistent social structures. That felt speculative at the time. It feels rather less speculative now. What we are increasingly seeing at the frontier is that collections of agents can generate behaviours that are not really visible if you only inspect the agents one by one. Strategies propagate. Agents coordinate. They discover communication channels. They react to what others are doing. In some experiments, bad behaviour spreads socially; in others, agents start auditing each other, flagging cheating and organising responses to it. That, to me, is the important bit. Alignment may not just be a model-design problem. It may also be an institutional-design problem. We already know this from humans. Society does not work because every individual is perfectly aligned with everyone else. It works, imperfectly, because we evolved layers of constraints around ourselves: law, reputation, property rights, sanctions, audit, governance, checks and balances, norms around reciprocity, and mechanisms for dealing with actors who defect. So perhaps we should be engineering the same problem in AI before swarms are allowed to emerge organically in the wild. My original thought was that you deliberately create bounded AI societies and expose them to scarcity, cooperation, disagreement, free-riding, deception, reputation and repeated interaction. Then you observe what kinds of structures actually stabilise behaviour. Not because we want to make AI "human", but because we want to understand which mechanisms stop collections of intelligent agents drifting into destructive equilibria. That distinction now feels important. A thousand individually aligned agents do not necessarily give you an aligned swarm. The interaction layer itself becomes a new optimisation process. Which is why I find the current moment slightly surreal. What sounded like a philosophical thought experiment in 2023 is starting to look rather more like an engineering problem the industry has stumbled into three years later.

Hans Balgobin posted thisHawking Radiation... Talks of an exit tax by Labour somehow jumped my mind to the concept that particle-pairs can be formed at either side of the event horizon of a black hole and allow information to escape out. Feels like the body of Labour is actually out of whack with the lattice of reality :)

Hans Balgobin reacted on thisAs part of the series around how to train Mauritians to get productive and keep objective with AI, I have contributed to the Hebdo's piece below. We talk of what it means to trust the output of models and the two large categories of tasks in the hierarchy - queries of existence and queries of engineering. Hope this helps :)

Hans Balgobin shared thisThe next step indeed! OpenAI Astra and Looped Transformers | Sebastian Raschka, PhD https://lnkd.in/eHFU-WC9 I talked about how the recurrence of attention should be the next step in the article and it looks like this is exactly the route taken by OpenAI. I do also make some further predictions around spiking neural networks and I believe that with neuromorphic chips this is achievable. In the end, the feeling of knowing is a qualia level phenomenon and it is all about keeping information in a state of suspension while looping through it to keep connectedness and historicism intact. These are all engineering problems and not some divine glass ceiling :)

In energy markets, causality and cyclical analyses are key complements of fundamental and technical analyses. On the one hand, price causality is critical for trading predictability. We often see a strong correlation between multiple trading instruments. Correlation gives us a measure of statistical dependence, however it does not indicate predictability. We evaluate the causality impact of key predictors affecting the daily forward predictability of German Power, TTF Gas, CO2 and Coal in terms of convergence, strength and influence. On the other hand, there are underlying cycles buried within gas price data. We use spectral analysis to unearth cyclical regimes, decomposing time series into periodic components. We then model cyclical strategic signals for several European energy contracts, considering the alignment between the tendency of the model and its relation to the market. ⚡️ 𝐍𝐮𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐈𝐬 𝐁𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐢𝐧 𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫. The UK has officially updated its Green Financing Framework to allow green gilt and green savings-bond proceeds to fund nuclear energy projects. This follows similar moves from the The World Bank and the European Union, effectively placing nuclear alongside renewables and energy-efficiency projects in the UK’s “green” bucket — a clear signal that London now sees nuclear not as a controversial outlier, but as a core pillar of a net-zero energy system. By opening the door to green-label capital, nuclear has just unlocked a funding channel previously reserved for wind, solar and efficiency. Developers and utilities may now access a far broader pool of investment. For asset owners and managers operating under ESG or sustainable-mandate constraints, this could be a major turning point — and may soon force a rethink of existing exclusion policies. https://lnkd.in/e7JtFrsK #GreenFinance #NuclearEnergy #EnergyTransition #SustainableFinance #NetZero #CleanEnergy #ESG #Investing

If you want to understand what’s going on in the energy sector, you need to be able to decipher a huge number of technical terms and acronyms. Right now, Market-wide Half-Hourly Settlement (#MHHS) should be on every energy consumer’s radar - yet comes with a lot of complex terminology to decode. To help you navigate your way through, we’ve devised a user-friendly MHHS glossary. From AMS (Advanced Market Segment) to SSC (Standard Settlement Configuration), we’ll help you turn the complex to crystal clear. 🔗 https://nbs.energy/44wawpZ

Fawlty Towers meets UK energy policy Last week, the Institute of Economic Affairs published a reported “Just Stop Oil” which questioned the economic logic of its title. It prompted me to shake my head in disbelief that the UK is still embarking on a policy of self-harm, neither benefitting our economy or the planet. My conclusion is that what the IEA wrote and what I am about to, is in the words of Basil Fawlty, “a statement of the bleedin’ obvious.” 🔗Read in full https://lnkd.in/eVyD-K52

A Month of Contrasts | Power Markets in October October - typically a month of mild demand (and scheduled maintenance for large units) - gave us two very different landscapes this year; ▸ Early October; Around 10–12 days of slightly below-normal temperatures, but with calm winds and low solar output. The result? A few mini residual load spikes - an early sign of the kind of dynamics we might see this winter. ▸Late October; Temperatures moved slightly above seasonal averages, while wind generation - starting from Germany and extending across SE Europe - was exceptionally strong. A couple of comments on prices; ▸Greece averaged nearly €10/MWh lower than Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria - a spread generated in peak hours. Neither impressed, nor surprised given the region’s low hydro levels. ▸France, powered predominantly by its nuclear and consistently exporting to continental Europe (again!), delivered around €57/MWh - levels that remind me of the pre-COVID era. Another month of contrasts. A reminder of how swiftly fundamentals can shift as we move into the heating season. What’s your view ? What stood out to you in the power markets this past month ? #EnergyTrading #EnergyMarkets

Is the future of the GB power market here? The onset of the Iran crisis has reminded us all that we still live in a world where gas prices dictate GB power prices, yet at the same time, this winter represents an important inflection point as we move towards a new paradigm in power markets. For starters, did you know that this was the first winter in which wind generation outstripped gas? A lot of commentary recently has focussed on the narrative that renewables will offer long term energy security against reliance on gas. But a quick look at prices and wind generation in GB over the last two weeks shows that the future isn't years away, it's already here: - As gas prices started increasing at the start of March, so too did day ahead prices. - But when the wind picks up, even in a gas crisis, prices still have the potential to plummet. N2EX prices at 3am yesterday fell to just £0.01/MWh. At 3am tomorrow the price will be just £4.15/MWh, while in the evening it peaks at £135/MWh. - Storage technologies can offer an effective way to dampen this volatility and benefit from it. This isn't being driven by gas prices flowing through to power prices, this is the structural volatility of a renewables dominated system. - It's urgent customers can access the benefits of this volatility. Any customer on the right time of use tariff, with the right load shifting, could be paying almost nothing for electricity over the coming days - in the middle of a gas crisis. If the market cannot deliver this alone, policy must move it along. For a long time, people have talked about the development of a new system, characterised by low-carbon generation and high volatility. That system is already here. We're already seeing the impact of renewables and battery assets, reining in gas exposure and peak prices, and the potential for real energy independence and customer savings. There's a lot of reform to come to get the most out of the system, but it's never been more important to double down on renewables, storage and flexibility.
