As a busy wine consultant, I spend a lot of time telling other people NOT to do what we did.
Amanda and I bought a small block of vines 22 years ago.
No plan.
Not much money.
No name, no brand, no customers.
No 'Vision', no 'Purpose', no 'Values'.
Just an odd feeling that this was what we should be doing.
Did we, immediately, sit down, sketch out our Vision, and build a business plan?
Did we declare the values we live by?
Did we even understand our motivation?
No. We did not.
We saw a road leading off somewhere - that we liked the look of.
So we followed it.
We gave away the grapes for the first 3 years.
Then we made our first wine, and Domaine of the Bee was born.
We found our first customers by letter, and slowly built a mailing list.
In 2014, we launched our Wine Club. We now have a modest 450 members, who have found us almost entirely through word-of-mouth, and who now buy 80% of our production.
In 2027, we hope to plant a new vineyard. To regenerate our land, and to bring hope to a drought-struck region.
And as we pause to reflect, 22 years after we started, we have finally taken the time to work out, and write down, what has been motivating us all along.
And it is CONNECTION.
Connection to people
Connection to land
Connection to the seasons
Connection to each other
Wine has an extraordinary place in our culture.
It sits at the intersection of geology, biology, cuisine, art, history, culture, psychology and philosophy.
And the bottle also sits on the table we gather round to tell stories, and renew the bonds between us.
Whether we are:
- wine nerds - who centre the conversation around the wine, or
- wine enjoyers - who just enjoy the flavour and the buzz
(and many of us are both) .....
.....we firmly believe that wine is here to increase human happiness and thriving, by connecting us to what's important in life.
Have a read of our manifesto - and if you share in this vision for wine's place in our lives, please share this post with your network. And tell us what you think in the comments.
