GARY PAFFETT WINS RACE, PAUL DI RESTA - CHAMPION

Shanghai. Fortune in the Far East. Scottish Mercedes-Benz driver Paul Di Resta ends up second in the DTM finale in the metropolis of Shanghai, which makes him the 2010 DTM champion. Bruno Spengler from Canada (Mercedes-Benz), who was the points' leader prior to the race, failed to make up positions from 17th place on the grid following an accident in qualifying, which cost him his three points' margin. In the final standings, 24 year old Di Resta has 71 points. "This smile won't be off my face for a long time.

Fortunately, my flight is only booked for Monday. I would have liked for more family members to be here to celebrate with me. But now, I will celebrate with the team. Today, it was more about the title rather than victory in the race. That has worked out", Di Resta described his feelings. In total, the Scot scored three race wins and three second places this season. Di Resta only failed to score points on two occasions.

British driver Gary Paffett won the race in China, which allowed him to become runner up in the final drivers' standings to complete the 1-2-3 for Mercedes-Benz in the championship. "Now, I have won for the second time in Shanghai after 2004. I am enjoying this type of circuits. My goal was to win this race. The rest was out of my hands", said race winner Paffett.

The German DTM champion of the years 2008 and 2009, Timo Scheider, became the best placed driver of an Audi A4 DTM by finishing third in the DTM finale. In the battle for the title, Scheider was also the best driver with four rings on the bonnet of his car in fourth place. "Admittedly, I had problems at the beginning of the season, but the team kept its faith in me. In the second half of the season, I was again able to battle for pole positions and race wins. Third place in the final round is a good way to end the year", said Scheider, looking back on the 2010 season.

Behind German Martin Tomczyk (Audi) in fourth place, Spaniard Miguel Molina became the best-placed driver with a 2008 spec car with his Audi A4 DTM in fifth. DTM rookie David Coulthard from Scotland achieved his maiden points' finish. The Mercedes-Benz driver ended up eighth and scored one point. 19,000 spectators came to watch the DTM season finale in the Far East. After a collision with seven minutes remaining, the race was stopped and wasn't restarted.

The first DTM race of the 2011 season will take place at the Hockenheimring Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany on May 1st next year.

FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON FOR TIMO SCHEIDER

Adria - Incredible action in the penultimate DTM round of the season at the Adria International Raceway. The spectators got to see an action packed race with many overtaking manoeuvres, a thrilling battle for the title and a winner that nobody had reckoned with prior to the race. Reigning DTM champion Timo Scheider started from 15th place on the grid, showed a great race and crossed the finish line with his Audi A4 DTM as the jubilant winner. "I had a great start and at the end of the first lap, as the race was stopped due to Alexandre Premat's accident, I already was in seventh place. Before the start, I said to my team as a joke that this could become the best race of my life. And now I have won! Unbelievable", said Scheider, describing his first race win of the season.

British driver Gary Paffett showed the best nerves in the battle for the title, finishing second with his AMG Mercedes C-Class, thus reducing the gap to the points' leader in the battle for the title from 14 to nine points. Now, Canadian Bruno Spengler is on top again in the drivers' standings with 66 points. After his third place in the race, the Mercedes-Benz driver managed to claim back the lead from his fellow Mercedes-Benz driver Paul Di Resta (63 points), who is now second in the standings. Scottish driver Di Resta just missed out on championship points by finishing ninth. Paffett said after the race: "I knew that it would be very difficult. The track is slippery and there was massive tyre wear. The important thing is that I have made it to the finish and that I have reduced the gap in the championship standings." Spengler was also confident after the race and prior to the finale at Shanghai. "That will be a great finale. There are three drivers who can still become champion. I will do everything to end the season on top."

The race started with a bang. At the start, Spengler overtook pole sitter Paffett. A few corners later, Audi driver Mike Rockenfeller tangled with erstwhile points' leader Di Resta and both came off the track. The two benefited from a severe accident by Frenchman Alexandre Premat at the end of the opening lap. At high speed, the Audi driver tangled with Mercedes-Benz driver Maro Engel on the main straight, also came off the track and barrel-rolled his car several times. Fortunately, Premat was able to get out of the totally damaged wreck all by himself and was immediately responsive. The 28 year old was taken to a hospital in Adria for observation. The race was interrupted and Rockenfeller's and Di Resta's cars could be repaired in time for the restart after some 20 minutes.

After that, the DTM drivers showed probably the best DTM race of the year on a damp track. Scheider made his way up to the front and made two very late pit stops. This tactic was effective: the advantage established by the German was enough to remain in front after the service. Spengler also lost his second place to Paffett after the pit stop. German driver Markus Winkelhock achieved his best season result to date by finishing fourth with his 2008 spec Audi A4 DTM. His fellow Audi drivers Oliver Jarvis (GB) and Martin Tomczyk (D) followed in fifth and sixth place. Mercedes-Benz driver Engel ended up seventh. For Swede Mattias Ekstrom (Audi), who was in third place for a long time, the race didn't bring the expected result after he lost valuable positions due to problems during the pit stop, eventually finishing eighth. For many laps, Di Resta was involved in a battle with Spanish Audi driver Miguel Molina. After a collision between Di Resta and Molina, the Spaniard briefly came off the track, but was able to continue. One lap later, the suspension broke on Molina's car. He slid across the track and collided with Di Resta in the process. The Scot managed to finish the race, but wasn't able to score any points in the battle for the title.

Nurburg. A dominant lights to flag victory for Mercedes-Benz driver Bruno Spengler at the Nurburgring. After 177.821 kilometres, the Canadian crossed the finish line as the winner, scoring the maximum of ten points for the second time this season already after his success at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz. Spengler's British fellow Mercedes-Benz drivers Paul Di Resta and Gary Paffett completed the clean sweep of the podium for Mercedes-Benz. After the fifth DTM season round, the 27-year old is leading the points' standings with a margin of 16 points over British driver Jamie Green (Mercedes-Benz). A total of 86,000 spectators attended the race weekend at the Nurburgring.

Spengler commented the seventh DTM race win of his career as follows: "It was a great race. The start was absolutely awesome. I really concentrated on the starting lights. Then I just pushed and tried to keep the other guys behind me. First to third place - that is a great feeling. This is our 100th victory since we have been racing against Audi."

Reigning DTM champion Timo Scheider was the best placed Audi driver of the day. From eighth place on the grid, he moved up to fourth after a successful start and then defended his position until the end of the race. "The race wasn't bad: starting eighth and finishing fourth. That is okay and quite a decent result, but all in all, this certainly wasn't satisfying. Nevertheless, I notice an upward trend", said Scheider.

Mercedes-Benz driver Green had to withstand attacks by his fellow Mercedes-Benz driver Ralf Schumacher for several laps, but remained in front and crossed the finish line in fifth position as the best placed driver of a 2008 spec car ahead of Schumacher. The German scored his first three championship points of the season for finishing sixth. Two times' DTM champion Mattias Ekstrom wasn't able to turn his expectations into reality after having claimed pole position in qualifying. The Swede lost valuable places after problems at the start and he took the chequered flag in seventh place. Scot David Coulthard (Mercedes-Benz) finished tenth in his fifth DTM race. Last year's winner Martin Tomczyk finished 13th with his Audi A4 DTM.

In the points' standings, Spengler is leading with 42 points from Green (26 points) and Paffett and Di Resta, who are tied at 25 points each. The sixth DTM race weekend of the year will be held at Zandvoort in The Netherlands from August 20th till 22nd.

Mercedes-Benz motorsport director Norbert Haug: "I just don't know where to start. That was really good. Today, we really will have a ball. The team has deserved it. I am speechless when I see how quick Mattias was yesterday and what happened today. I thought that he would pull away from us. Apparently, something has changed dramatically overnight. Surely, that was one of our best races ever."

In the season opener of the most popular international touring car series at the Hockenheimring Baden-Wuerttemberg, the Briton won after 39 laps from his fellow Mercedes-Benz drivers Bruno Spengler, Jamie Green and Paul Di Resta. Spring was in the air for Mercedes-Benz. The brand from Suttgart locked out the first four places in the DTM season opener at the Hockenheimring Baden-Wuerttemberg. After 39 laps and 178.386 kilometres, British driver Gary Paffett crossed the finish line as the race winner. The 29 year old was followed home by his fellow Mercedes-Benz drivers Bruno Spengler from Canada, Briton Jamie Green as the best-placed driver of a 2008 spec car and Scot Paul Di Resta. "Winning the first race is a great way to start the season. Last year, the season started just the other way round for me. Today, our goal was to score as many points as possible. The team has done a tremendous job and I like the car - it is just running well. I could see the rest of the season going like this", said the winner of the opening round immediately after the race. Paffett, the 2005 DTM champion, scored his 15th DTM race win at Hockenheim."

The best-placed Audi driver was German Mike Rockenfeller in fifth place. The 26 year old is driving an Audi A4 DTM from the 2008 range. "My start was great. I overtook Paul Di Resta. We had some slight contact in the process and I lost a few positions. In spite of the damage to the front, the car was still quick. Moreover, we had a good strategy. Hopefully, we will be stronger in the races to come", said Rockenfeller. Spaniard Miguel Molina (Audi) showed an impressive DTM debut, finishing in eighth place and scoring his first championship point right away in his maiden race. In ninth place, Mercedes-Benz driver Ralf Schumacher just missed out on championship points. Ex-Formula 1 driver David Coulthard (Mercedes-Benz) made up five places during the race and finished twelfth in his first ever DTM race.

Bright sunshine and 78,000 fans were a great setting for the first DTM race weekend of the year. The fans got to see a thrilling start. Pole sitter Gary Paffett and German Martin Tomczyk (Audi) in second place had a tough battle for the lead. Tomczyk came out on top and took the lead, but suffered a punctured left rear tyre on his car on lap eleven. The 28 year old still made it back into the pits and initially was able to continue his race, but had to park his damaged car for good on lap 32. Paffett didn't lose the lead anymore and scored a dominant win.

For Mattias Ekstrom, the 2004 and 2007 DTM champion, the race didn't go too well. During the race, the Audi driver made it up from fifth on the grid into second place. However, as Ekstrom had come in for his first mandatory pit stop one lap too early, he had to repeat it and lost valuable seconds and his position. The Swede still scored some points in the battle for the title by finishing sixth. Reigning DTM champion Timo Scheider (Audi) came home in seventh place.
