The Environment Bank

Brokering a better deal for biodiversity

At the Environment Bank, we generate investment in conservation through biodiversity offsetting. We work with landowners, developers, ecologists and planning authorities to prevent biodiversity loss and deliver environmentally sustainable development.

About the Environment Bank

Biodiversity offsetting

Biodiversity offsetting determines the impact of development on wildlife habitat and enables the re-creation of that habitat in an alternative location that can be managed for wildlife. It is a process that sits alongside existing environmental planning laws - like a safety net to prevent biodiversity loss.

How it works

Offsetting is an unbiased and quantitive system. All development proposals are subject to the same assessment techniques to ensure fairness. Evaluation of receptor sites uses equivalent Government-approved metrics, so that no net loss - and preferably gain - of biodiversity is achieved.

Pilots

Biodiversity offsetting is happening across the UK right now. Here you can see some of the projects we are working with. If you are looking to start an offsetting scheme like this, we can help you to achieve it:

Register land

Do you own land that could be registered to receive a biodiversity offset? We are always looking for new sites so, if you have some land that you'd like to put into long-term nature conservation management in return for a financial payment, we can help you do that.
