In response to the rampant illiteracy in Los Angeles' underserved schools, teacher turned author Alicia Logan (her pen name is 1. divine) recently began developing a literary series called Drama High. Reminiscent of Francine Pascal's Sweet Valley High books, Drama High is geared toward a more culturally diverse audience, but mainly focuses on the unique problems that African American students face. "I want to start a revolution with reading," said Logan who is also determined to get LAUSD students to become independent thinkers.
The 44-volume series is centered on the students of the fictitious, yet realistic South Bay High (somewhere between Compton and San Pedro). The main character, Jade Jackson is witty, cute and has both street and book smarts, a combination that proves to be her curse as well as her blessing. …
