You can cancel a purchase or renewal and claim your refund yourself from your account, without contacting support. This guide explains the WordPress.com refund policy, refund periods, and how long a refund takes to arrive.
Canceling a subscription does not issue a refund on its own. Canceling stops future renewals, and your subscription stays active until its expiration date. To get your money back, complete all the steps below, including the removal step. Learn more about canceling or removing a subscription.
To refund a purchase or renewal, take the following steps:
- Visit the billing section of your account.
- Select “Active upgrades“:

- Click the purchase or renewal you want to cancel or refund.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Cancel in the “Cancel subscription” section:

- On the next screen, review what you will lose, select the confirmation checkbox, then click the “Cancel subscription” button:

- Back on the purchase screen, you’ll find a notice at the top to say when your subscription will expire. Scroll down to the bottom and click Remove in the “Remove subscription” section:

- On the next screen, review what you will lose, select the confirmation checkbox, then click the “Continue removal” button:

- On the next screen, review the information presented and click Continue. This removes the purchase immediately and refunds the eligible amount.
To confirm your cancellation and refund, you can:
- Confirm your subscription is no longer listed in your account’s active upgrades.
- Visit your billing history where the refund amount will be shown:

If you are not sure which purchase a charge relates to, search your billing history by site name or product name. You can also match the transaction code on your bank statement to a WordPress.com purchase. If you still cannot place it, see resolve a charge you don’t recognize.
If you can’t log in, you can recover your account in these ways:
- Learn how to reset your password.
- If you can’t reset your password, learn how to verify your account ownership.
- Get help with a recent charge you don’t recognize.
After processing, refunds usually take about seven to ten business days to appear on your bank or credit card statement. International refunds may take longer to reach you. Your bank can tell you when to expect the refund and how it will be listed on your statement.
You will see a record of the refund immediately in your WordPress.com billing history.
In a small number of cases, your bank reverses the original charge instead of refunding it. The payment then disappears from your bank account after a few days, as if the transaction never happened, instead of showing as a refund credit.
You will receive your refund through the same payment method you used when you purchased the subscription, service, or add-on. You can view your billing history to get a copy of the refund receipt. If the payment method you used has been canceled or closed, contact your bank or financial institution to ask how to access the funds.
In most cases, you receive a full refund as long as you claim it within the refund period for your purchase type.
You may receive a partial refund if you made multiple purchases and not all purchases are eligible to be refunded. For example, if you purchased a plan and a domain and claimed a refund after 5 days, you would receive a refund for the plan but not the domain. The final refund amount would be the full cost of the plan, with no refund for the domain.
Refunds are not prorated. If you purchased a 12-month plan and canceled it after nine months, you would not receive a refund for the remaining three months. You would receive a full refund within the refund period, or no refund outside the refund period.
Each purchase type has its own refund period, unless applicable law provides otherwise. If you have questions or issues about your refund, contact support.
Your refund window starts on the date of your most recent charge for that subscription, which is either the date you bought it or the date it renewed. To find that date before you start canceling, take the following steps:
- Visit your Billing History in your WordPress.com account.
- Find the purchase or renewal you want to refund. You can search your billing history by site name or product name.
- Compare the transaction date to the refund period for your purchase type, listed below.
If the transaction date falls inside the refund period, follow the steps in How to get a refund to claim your refund yourself.
If automatic renewal is enabled for your plan, yearly plans renew one month before the expiration date, so the refund window for a yearly renewal closes about two weeks before your current plan expires. For example, if your plan expires on October 15, the renewal charge occurs on September 15, and the 14-day refund window closes on September 29. Learn more about when renewals occur.

Domain name registrations and renewals are refundable if the domain name is canceled within 96 hours (4 days) from when the domain name was registered or renewed. Please note the cautions regarding canceling a domain name before proceeding.
If you register a free domain name with your plan and request a refund after the 96-hour domain refund period, we will credit the difference between the cost of the plan and the cost of the domain name. You will keep the domain name and can use it elsewhere, or cancel it so it won’t be renewed next year.
When your domain name renews, an additional year is added to the domain’s expiry date. It is not possible to reverse the renewal while still keeping the domain name. You must cancel the domain name to be eligible for a refund within 96 hours of renewal.
Additional years/multi-year renewals within the same year are non-refundable. If a domain name renewed multiple years successively is canceled, only the latest year’s renewal cost is refundable.
Domain name transfers are non-refundable unless the process is canceled before the transfer is completed. Note that once a domain name transfer is in progress, it can no longer be canceled or refunded unless the transfer process fails.
The redemption fee (US$80) for expired domains is non-refundable unless the redemption process fails to redeem the domain. Learn more about what happens to expired domain names here.
