Event Details
The Dove Cottage Young Poets was set up in 2013 by the Education Team at Wordsworth Grasmere and is a group of young people age 13 to 19 who meet fortnightly online to read, discuss and write poetry with Cumbrian poet Katie Hale. The group looks at a range of contemporary and historical poems each session and creates their own work in response.
In early 2020 and again in 2023 the group created a range of new work in response to Wordsworthian themes and these poems and video clips are now on show in the Museum at Wordsworth Grasmere. Katie Hale provides creative and engaging workshops and guides the young people onto a path of performance and publication, encouraging the young people to attend and perform in a range of events including, the Brewery Poets and Kendal Poetry Festival. This Autumn the group will be working on poetry that builds towards the 2027 ‘Out of Tune’ exhibition at Wordsworth Grasmere which explores the Climate Crisis.
If you know a young person age 13-19 who lives in (or near) Cumbria and would like to join the Dove Cottage Young Poets please email Zoe McLain to education@wordsworth.org.uk

Join us in our cosy Café for Gothic book chats this autumn and delve deeper into the world of Gothic fiction. From doppelgangers to vampires, wild moors to haunted woods, dark labyrinths to spooky castles, Gothic literature has given us some of our most enduring and popular stories.
In this six-part series we will explore the books we think we know alongside some hidden gems. Our book chats will be prompted by extracts we read together in the session, so you can read the books in advance or jump straight in in the session itself.
17 October 2026: Mary Shelley, Frankenstein (1818)
14 November 2026: Wilkie Collins, The Woman in White (1860)
5 December 2026: Ann Radcliffe, The Mysteries of Udolpho (1794)
6 February 2027: Bram Stoker, Dracula (1897) & Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, Carmilla (1872)
13 March 2027: Charlotte Bronte, Jane Eyre (1847) & Jean Rhys, Wide Sargasso Sea (1966)
24 April 2027: Mary Shelley, The Last Man (1826)
There are 12 spaces available for each session of the Gothic Book Club, so we recommend booking in advance. Copies of the book will be available from our online shop soon.

‘But only a host of phantom listeners
That dwelt in the lone house then
Stood listening in the quiet of the moonlight
To that voice from the world of men’
― Walter de la Mare, ‘The Listeners’, 1912
This relaxed creative writing workshop explores a range of Gothic hauntings: from the tormented lovers of Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights, to haunting as a manifestation of grief as captured by Mary Shelley in her essay ‘On Ghosts’. The Gothic ghost takes on many forms; from omens and messenger to tormented lovers, from apparitions in candlelit rooms to empty homes haunted by loss and grief. Gothic writers centre experiences of hauntings, experiences which can in equal parts frighten, console, reform and warn.
In this workshop we will write poems haunted by the Gothic past, the haunted landscapes of the present and imagine the ghosts of the future. There will be a range of writing prompts and no previous experience is necessary.

‘The Phantom slowly, gravely, silently approached. When it came, Scrooge bent down upon his knee; for in the very air through which the spirit moved it seemed to scatter gloom and mystery.’
― A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
A spellbinding evening of Gothic tales in candlelit Dove Cottage.
Discover the origins of modern horror and fantasy fiction in this bewitching storytelling event. This time the theme is GHOSTS: the uncanny hauntings and unforgettable spectres to be found in Gothic fiction, from the genre’s beginnings in the 1760s all the way through to the mid-1800s.
The evening begins with a themed tour of Ghost Story! Into the Gothic Imagination. Find out how 18th century ghost stories influenced the most famous works of Gothic fiction, and learn about some of the iconic ghosts found in the novels of Horace Walpole, Emily Brontë and Charles Dickens. After exploring the exhibition, gather around the hearth in Dove Cottage for performed readings from some of these uncanny tales, including A Christmas Carol, The Castle of Otranto, Wuthering Heights and traditional Cumbrian ghost stories.
Your ticket includes seasonal cake and a glass of non-alcoholic hot spiced cordial (Vegan/GF options available). We encourage you to get into the Gothic spirit and dress for the occasion! This special event is designed for adults, with a total group size of no more than 12 people.
Please note that the fire in Dove Cottage may be lit during this event.
If these events sell out we may add an additional date – if you would like to express interest please send us an email at enquiries@wordsworth.org.uk or join the waiting list on TryBooking.

Join us at Dove Cottage and help us get into the Christmas spirit – and be introduced to some Christmas ‘spirits’. We will begin in the Learning Space with hot chocolate, gingerbread, dressing up and a spooky Gothic craft to get us into the mood. Then we will go into the dark, candlelit atmosphere of Dove Cottage to hear some seasonal supernatural tales: from Scrooge’s meeting with the ghostly Jacob Marley in London, to the sometimes helpful, sometimes mischievous supernatural beings that might be hiding somewhere in the Cumbrian landscape this festive season.
For families with children aged 5+ (younger siblings can also be booked onto this session). Children £10, adults £5.
Please note that the fire in Dove Cottage may be lit during this event.
