AI has been changing how people shop, and recently it has started to shop for them directly. At Shopify's DotDev developer conference July 21-22 2026, Shopify's Head of Partnerships, Atlee Clark, opened the keynote with a number that should get every CPG brand's attention: AI-driven sessions are converting 80% better than organic search, and half of them land directly on a product page.

Elvie's international business was still a patchwork. Its global stores ran on Statamic and other legacy systems, separate from the new US foundation. To continue aligning the brand internationally, Barrel migrated Elvie's UK store onto Shopify and brought it onto the same theme layer as the US site. Elvie went with a multi-store approach, so the two markets run as separate stores on a shared codebasesystem, keeping each market independent while letting improvements and functionality carry across both. The UK store launched on time at the top of June, in under two months.

On May 27, Barrel hosted a live webinar with partners from Shopify and Good Protein to talk through what it actually takes to get cited by AI search tools. One example from that conversation captures the reality of Generative Engine Optimization (GEO): picture a blogger in Nebraska, with no meaningful following, who writes a single post comparing protein powders. That post could end up cited constantly by AI assistants, sometimes ahead of the brands it reviews. It's a small, specific scenario, but it's playing out across categories right now.
