See the everyday

T1D doesn’t have a type. It can be anyone, anywhere. But those who have it all share the same resilience and hope.

“I was diagnosed with T1D at five years old. That fearless five-year-old only grew more resilient and hungry for life as she discovered more reasons to be grateful.

My life as a dancer required me to put work into my health and build trust and gratitude for myself, my family, and the organizations that facilitate the improvement of medical management. My effort to manage this condition only fuels my ambition.

I am where I am today, a professional performer, because of my involvement with Breakthrough T1D. The year I was diagnosed, my parents formed our Walk Team, “Team Delilah”, and we never looked back. From attending the Children’s Congress in Washington D.C. at six and delivering a speech at the NYC Promise Ball when I was sixteen, to presenting at the LA Gala at 23, so many of my proudest moments have been with Breakthrough T1D.

Advocacy has shown me the power of my voice. This disease is the source of my strength and compassion. It’s what drives me to create art and connect with others.”

“Our lives were touched by type 1 diabetes when Campbell was diagnosed at 2 years old. We tested Calder for T1D antibodies eight months after Campbell was diagnosed, and we thought that because we don’t have any family history, that Campbell was going to be the only one with T1D in our family, but it came back that Calder had a high A1C with a positive ZNT8 antibody (stage 2 T1D). I want everyone to know that early-stage T1D doesn’t exactly fit into a box… the support for an early-stage family might look different from the support needed for [another] family.”

“Witnessing the progression of T1D breakthroughs over the years has been nothing short of remarkable. When I first started insulin injections, it was a cumbersome routine, requiring multiple injections a day. Today, thanks to advancements in insulin pump technology, managing T1D has become more streamlined and efficient, improving my quality of life.”

See the breakthroughs happening now

When we see T1D, we move closer to breakthroughs in research, advocacy, and care that help people live fuller, healthier lives.

I remember all the struggles before continuous glucose monitors and insulin pumps. The life of people with this disease has dramatically improved over the past few years, and it’s going to improve further as we go.”
Since our founding in 1970, we have funded more than $2.5 billion in type 1 diabetes research. We’re advancing cures and tangibly improving lives by funding leading scientists in the US and globally.

My younger brother was diagnosed with T1D seven years after me, and since then, advocacy has become a way for me to help people like him from facing the same access challenges I did.”
Our advocacy is critical to advancing breakthroughs for the entire T1D community. With nonpartisan and grassroots support, we advance treatments, influence policy, and improve global access to care.

Participation in clinical trials is essential because that is the only way we are ever going to make progress on these next steps. We are getting better treatments. We are getting closer and closer to a cure that’s available for everyone through clinical trials.”
We’re closing the gap between access and adoption for T1D therapies by developing educational materials for healthcare professionals, early detection programs, and expanding clinical trial participation.

I want to show people [T1D is] not scary. I want to show people it’s manageable. I want to show people that he’s the same kid.”
