Origin and history of devilish
devilish(adj.)
late 15c., "characteristic of or befitting the Devil;" see devil + -ish. Related: Devilishly; devilishness. As an adverb, "wickedly," 1610s. In modern use sometimes in vogue colloquially as a pure intensifier.
I will just repeat a few of the remarks which were made in a retail store a few days since:—A piece of linen, DEVILISH YELLOW—one piece of dark calico, DEVILISH BLACK—another, DEVILISH GRAVE—another, DEVILISH GAY—another, DEVILISH UGLY—and another, DEVILISH PRETTY, &c. ... In short any, and all colors, and no colours whatever; any shape, features, form or size, are equally descriptive of the prince of DARKNESS. [Gazette of the United States, Philadelphia, May 26, 1792]
