Origin and history of stridulate

stridulate(v.)

of certain insects, "make a noise like a cicada, effect stridulation," 1838, probably from Italian stridulare "crack; crackle." Related: Stridulated; stridulating; stridulatory. Agent noun stridulator "insect's apparatus for stridulating" is attested by 1880.
