We use this creamy homemade tahini sauce recipe for absolutely everything! It takes less than 10 minutes to make, and once you taste this combination of tahini, lemon, and fresh garlic, you’ll find yourself making it again and again.

Since sharing our easy tahini recipe, we’ve been experimenting with more ways to use it. We’ve shown how to use it for homemade hummus, and we’re now obsessed with this lemon garlic tahini sauce. You’ll find a jar in our fridge at all times!
This creamy, dairy-free sauce is a popular condiment throughout the Mediterranean and Middle East for good reason. You’ll often see it served with falafel, pita bread, grilled meats, and grilled veggies, but it is also excellent drizzled over salads, fresh vegetables, and grain bowls. We can’t wait for you to try it! For a slightly less creamy salad dressing, see our tahini dressing!
Key Ingredients
- Tahini Paste: This paste, made from sesame seeds, is the base of our sauce. Before measuring it, give it a really good stir to make it runny and smooth. You can buy jars of tahini or make your own. Here’s how to make tahini in a food processor or blender (it’s super simple, we promise!).
- Fresh Garlic: To help it melt into the sauce, grate the clove with a microplane or mince it into a fine paste. We’ve shared some tips on how to do this below.
- Fresh Lemon Juice: This thins the sauce and keeps the flavor fresh and bright.
- Olive Oil: We use extra-virgin olive oil. It makes our sauce smooth and luxurious.
- Spices and Parsley: We love stirring in a little cumin, cayenne, and salt, then finishing the sauce with some chopped fresh parsley. These are all optional, but we highly recommend them!
- Warm Water: This is the secret ingredient for making the smoothest, creamiest homemade tahini sauce. Watch our video to see how water quickly transforms the tahini into an unbelievably creamy sauce.

How to Make Tahini Sauce
Finely grate or mince your garlic. We don’t want big bits of raw garlic here, so either use a microplane to grate it finely, or use salt and a knife to turn it into a paste.
To make the paste with your knife, peel and finely mince the clove. Sprinkle with a pinch of coarse salt, then use the flat side of the knife to drag and press it over the garlic, scraping it across the cutting board’s surface. Pile up the garlic again, then repeat a few more times until it becomes a smooth paste.

Make the sauce. Whisk together the tahini, garlic paste, lemon juice, olive oil, and a pinch of salt in a bowl. It starts creamy, but then it might seize up and thicken (see the photo below). Don’t worry if it looks lumpy or stiff! We will fix that when we add the warm water.

Next, slowly whisk in warm water. As you whisk in the water, the sauce will miraculously relax and become super creamy. You can add as much or as little water as you like. It all depends on what you plan to use it for. For a thicker spread, add less water. For a more drizzly consistency, add a little more.

Finish with optional spices and herbs. You now have a tasty basic tahini sauce. We love adding a bit more flavor, though. In our recipe below, we include a slight earthiness from ground cumin, some heat from cayenne, and a fresh pop of color and flavor from chopped parsley.

Ways to Use Tahini Sauce
Once you make this creamy lemon garlic tahini sauce, you’ll always want a batch in your fridge. Use this sauce whenever you want to add a creamy (non-dairy) drizzle to your dishes. It works for salads, grain bowls, rice bowls, and wraps.
We especially love it tossed into this tahini kale bean salad or drizzled over roasted veggies, like our honey roasted carrots with tahini sauce. It even makes a fantastic drip for this garlic asparagus. We also it with homemade falafel, grilled chicken, and seafood, like baked salmon or cilantro lime butter shrimp.

You Will Need
⅓ cup (80 ml) well-stirred tahini, try homemade tahini
1 garlic clove, finely grated or made into a paste, see tips
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
Pinch fine sea salt
2 to 6 tablespoons lukewarm water
Pinch cumin, optional
Pinch cayenne, optional
1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley, optional
Directions
1Whisk tahini, garlic paste, lemon juice, olive oil, and salt in a bowl until combined. The mixture may thicken and look lumpy.
2Whisk in the water, a tablespoon at a time, until you have your desired consistency. If making a spread, look for the consistency of peanut butter. For a sauce, add enough water to resemble the consistency of runny yogurt.
3Stir in the optional cumin, cayenne pepper, and parsley. Taste for seasoning and adjust with additional salt or lemon juice.

Wow!! This truly was a life changer. All the years making hummus I’m the wrong order!! The taste was incredible.
Delicious, easy and fast. great dip for roast chicken and veggies.
I’m very new to cooking, please be kind. What is tahini?
Hi Jennifer, Tahini is a sesame seed paste. Here’s our detailed explanation of tahini and how to make it.
I make a really good tahini dressing. Just my own creation, no recipe. However, I do enjoy looking up recipes for things I already make to see what others do or come up with. That’s how I landed on this recipe. My tahini dressing is very good, but this one absolutely blew me and my husband away. Going forward, this is the tahini dressing that I will continue to make.
My family loved the lemony tahini sauce! It was perfect with your falafel recipe. A welcome change from the traditional tzatziki and hummus. Flavourful, fast and fresh. Can’t wait to make it again.
Thank you for this easy recipe. I have just made it and it has turned out great! I am going to try your falafel recipe next!
Tahini is one of those ingredients we always have in the cupboard but I never quite know how to use it. This dressing was so simple and delicious. I poured it over baked pumpkin, feta and spinach. I will be making the dressing again and again, thank you!
Thank you for making the tahini sauce so simple. I have spent 2 days trying to figure out how to make it. You could of saved me so. much money. Every sight had more or different ingredients. I am a loyal fan from now on. Thanks for sharing.Pamela
Great taste
The sauce came out bitter… 🙁 any tips on how to fix that?
Hi there, Certain brands of tahini can be more bitter than others so changing the brand of tahini or making your own might be best. You can also try adding a little more olive oil to balance it out a bit.
Thank you for this recipe. It is delicious! I had a bit of trouble at the beginning (because I hadn’t read the whole text hah) and my sauce wasn’t getting creamy. Then I added more lemon juice. It turned out really lemony but amazing.
cant wait to try it
thank you for the tahini sauce recipe,i cant wait to try it and it is so expensive in the store.
I add a bit more garlic but this recipe is delicious and so easy! I ate 3 salads consecutively I enjoyed it so much.
Thank you for the recipe, I’m excited to try it, I’m happy I found Tahini paste ( spicy ) then my Mexican side is happy.
This was fabulous! It’s now my favorite sauce for falafals!
Such a great sauce! First time ever that I’ve done homemade tahini, and this recipe is delicious–and sooo easy! The hummus is also spectacular. Thanks so much for the recipes. Now I’m going to try baba gonash (sp?)–yum!
How long will this last in the refrigerator? Looks delicious but I would be the only one eating it. Thanks!
I have kidney disease and salt is something I avoid thank you for your recepies Of course I leave out salt and that does effect taste. I will test my salt substitutes and see which one is the best to enhance flavor!
My husband is Arab, so I make a lo of Middle Eastern food. This is the best tahini recipe I have found. Tahini tastes like peanut butter to me, so it really needs to perfect balance of garlic and lemon. I think the cumin, cayenne and parsley make a world of difference. My husband was raised on tahini and he loves it, so that’s something!
What is your balance of garlic and lemon?
Hi There,
Thank you for your inspiration.
Will be making it soon.
Have you got a recipe for Halva.
