Winter has a way of finding every weak spot in your home. October is the perfect time to get ahead of it. A few small fixes now can save you from a big repair bill in January. ✔️ Listen for furnace warning signs. Strange noises, uneven heating, or an energy bill that’s creeping up are your furnace’s way of asking for attention. Small problems are cheaper to fix before the first cold snap. ✔️ Replace worn door and window seals. Rubber seals get compressed over time and leave tiny gaps that let heat escape. Plan on swapping them out about every 5 years. ✔️ Disconnect your outdoor hoses. A hose left connected can trap water that freezes and cracks the faucet or pipe. Unhook it and turn off the shutoff valve. ✔️ Seal drafts and boost insulation. Check the attic, basement, and crawl spaces. The less your heater has to work, the lower your bill. ✔️ Put your thermostat on a schedule. A programmable or smart thermostat stops you from paying to heat an empty house. Storm season doesn't send a calendar invite. When the power goes out, the last thing you want is to be digging through drawers in the dark. Here's what to have ready before the next storm: - Flashlights and LED lanterns. A good lantern lights up a whole room, not just the spot in front of you. Keep extra batteries with them. - Weather alert radio. If cell service drops, a NOAA weather radio still gets you emergency alerts. Hand-crank and solar models don't need batteries at all. - Stored drinking water. A large water container with a spigot makes it easy to keep your family hydrated if the outage lasts a few days. - A stocked first aid kit. Accidents happen more often in the dark, so keep one where everyone can find it. - Surge protectors for electronics. When the power comes back on, the surge can damage TVs, computers, and other electronics. A quality surge protector helps keep them safe. -A backup power source. A portable power station or generator can keep your fridge cold and your phones charged. Always run generators outside and away from windows. Bonus tip: if your home has a sump pump, think about a battery backup. Outages often hit during heavy rain, which is exactly when the pump is needed most.
