  • “This experience wasn’t just about the animals I saw during my time there. It was about empowering people who will continue making a difference every day.” When Meghan Respess, DVM, DACVECC, our national director of blood banking, joined the Mobile Animal Clinic with the Humane World for Animals on a recent Mars Ambassador Program (MAP) trip in Karnataka, India, her goal was simple: show up, lend a hand, and share knowledge. From advising on peri-operative efficiency and medication protocols to helping lead first aid training for passionate local volunteers, Dr. Respess saw firsthand how dedication transforms communities: “What I admired most was the team’s determination to make the biggest possible impact with the resources available to them,” Dr. Respess shared. It reinforced a lesson that was ingrained in me during my residency: do the best you can with what you have.” “Knowing that some of the information, training and ideas shared during the visit may continue benefiting animals long after I’ve left is deeply meaningful. Professionally and personally, it was one of the most fulfilling experiences I’ve ever had.” The Mobile Animal Clinic team and local volunteers are on the ground every day making a difference—providing sterilizations, anti-rabies vaccinations, emergency field medical care, and first-aid training. Reflecting on how stepping away from her daily hospital role to join them impacted her perspective, Dr. Respess shared: "At BluePearl, we're incredibly fortunate to have access to advanced diagnostics, medications, equipment, and the resources needed to practice exceptional medicine every day. Spending time in rural India reminded me not to take those things for granted. Witnessing that level of dedication was a powerful reminder that while medicine is supported by tools and technology, it is ultimately driven by unwavering commitment and compassion." #BeingBluePearl #ProudlyMars #MarsAmbassadorProgram

  • A fulfilling veterinary career is defined by the freedom to grow, learn new specialties, and embrace clinical challenges alongside trusted colleagues. For Salvador Alfaro, APCAII, an internal medicine veterinary assistant at our Monterey, CA, hospital, that progression has spanned eight impactful years across emergency, ICU, and internal medicine. Now, he is taking on an integral role within our hospital's new neurology service. Salvador recently completed an intensive week-long MRI training at BluePearl Irvine, preparing to bring advanced neuroimaging expertise to our Monterey patients once our on-site MRI is established. Reflecting on his journey and the community that made it possible, Salvador shared, "I’m grateful for the opportunities, mentorship, incredible colleagues, and lifelong friends who have supported me throughout my career." Across our national network, our Associates have the resources, continuous education, and cross-hospital training to continuously elevate their clinical practice. • When we asked for "tricks or treats," this wasn't quite what we had in mind! 🎃 Waffles is as sweet as they come, but this curious little puppy definitely brought some extra tricks to trick-or-treat season! He decided a few loose coins looked like a tasty snack, landing him in our emergency room at our Summerville, SC, hospital. Fortunately, our skilled team was able to retrieve all the coins using minimally invasive endoscopy, avoiding the need for a more invasive surgery. Waffles recovered like a total champ and was back to his happy, adorable, coin-free self in no time. As holiday decorations, treats and small objects fill our homes this season, keep an eye out for curious little noses. • Through the Mars Ambassador Program (MAP), Erin Corcoran, PHR, SHRM-SCP, people and organization business partner, traveled to Maine to board Rozalia Project’s 60-foot research vessel. Over seven days, Erin helped collect marine debris, catalog ocean data, and engage island communities on ocean health. From navigating wet landings across rocky shores to hosting community education nights on remote islands, she tackled daily shipboard tasks alongside her crew to protect coastal wildlife habitats. Erin reflected on the lasting impact of the journey: "Aside from picking up the debris, we made and continue to make a difference just by talking about the issues, the potential solutions, and Rozalia." Connecting passion for animals with ocean conservation created an unforgettable experience: "The coastline and the ocean are home to so many creatures, and we were all drawn to and concerned for every creature, the same way we are drawn to pets. Seeing that many creatures up close had a huge impact on us. We felt compassion for them as we saw and heard about the impact of warming, debris, and microplastics, and left Maine with a new concern and sense of responsibility for the environment they live in." Whether caring for pets or safeguarding wildlife habitats across our coastlines, our Associates lead the way in creating A Better World for Pets! #BeingBluePearl #ProudlyMars #ABetterWorldForPets #MarsAmbassadorProgram

  • What draws a clinician to emergency and critical care? For KimMi Whitehead, VMD, DACVECC, a board-certified critical care specialist at BluePearl Pet Hospital in Malvern, PA, it is the balance of urgency, uncertainty, and collaboration. At our Malvern hospital, Dr. Whitehead is connected to a network of seven Philadelphia-area pet hospitals, ensuring clinicians never practice on an island. "When a really difficult case comes through the door, the walls between services tend to disappear," she notes. "A critical patient rarely belongs neatly to one specialty." Join Dr. Whitehead for an educational session on "Pancreatitis: A Team Approach to Care" on Tuesday, Nov. 10, from 6–9 p.m. at our Malvern hospital! Connect with our team to explore career opportunities for veterinarians and veterinary technicians at our seven area hospitals and learn how BluePearl is here to support you at every step in your career. • Capping off #VetTechWeek with an inspiring story of skill, adaptability and lasting memories! As part of the Mars Ambassador Program (MAP), Nicole Black, CVT, CFVP, a veterinary technician at our Northeast Portland, OR, hospital, traded her emergency and specialty pet hospital setting for the remote Arctic landscape of Nunavut, Canada. Alongside fellow MAP volunteers and Veterinarians Without Borders, Nicole assisted with temporary pop-up clinics, vaccinations and essential pet care to underserved northern communities where permanent veterinary care isn't available. From adjusting anesthesia protocols with limited equipment to handling ATV farm calls in unpredictable weather, Nicole's trip showcased the incredible versatility and advanced skill that veterinary technicians bring to the ecosystem every day: "In a remote clinic setting, we are never sure exactly what may walk in the door. Technicians are trained to anticipate and be prepared for all potential situations," Nicole said. "Working without a full surgical and anesthetic setup is a challenge, for sure! Limited anesthetic options can mean working with protocols I may not use on a daily basis. Discussing these protocols with the other team members allowed all of us to have input on specific situations and provide individualized care." Beyond providing vital care, the assignment offered a powerful look at the historic bond between local communities and their working dogs. Nicole said, "Communities like Gjoa Haven are inaccessible by road; before air transportation, boats and dog sleds were the only ways to reach other communities. Now, these dogs are still considered members of the family. Working in Nunavut is a great reminder that happy, cared-for pets may look different than what we are used to." Thank you, Nicole, for representing BluePearl with such compassion, dedication and expertise on this incredible journey! #BeingBluePearl #ProudlyMars #MarsAmbassadorProgram
