  • After Cannes and the Fourth of July holiday in the US, we've finally had a moment to reflect on our time on the Croisette. The whole week at Cannes, we encouraged brands to run it like a newsroom. So we practiced what we preached - printing 3 editions of the Gutter Gazette, each turned around in under 24 hours, and handed out late-night at the Gutter Bar, where we knew our audience would be. We took inspiration from modern newsrooms with: -- A team in the field collecting quotes, intel, and interviews from all across the Croisette -- A daily editorial meeting picking out the most important moments from the day before and what would make it in the edition -- A distribution strategy that was flexible and iterated on in real-time The thesis of our campaign and the theme of the week: speed, rigor, flexibility, and curiosity beat polish and process. Brands that treat social like a newsroom are the ones winning the attention battle. At Caliber, this is how we approach all of our brands and clients. See below for our final edition of the Gutter Gazette, full of insights and highlights from our week.

  • We were back at it last night with another edition of the Gutter Gazette, this time with a game of would you rather from Brian Bonilla, the inside scoop on where to get designer giveaways (spoiler it’s DoorDash), and some commentary on the overflow of branded activations that have taken over the Croisette. Read it below. Featuring: Genie Gurnani Spotify Duolingo DoorDash Brian Bonilla Ad Age Billy Bohan Chinique Virgin Voyages Rhonda Hiatt M+C Saatchi Consulting

  • Last night we handed out 200 copies of the Gutter Gazette to the only audience that matters this week -- the ones still standing at midnight. The Gutter Gazette is a nightly dispatch from Cannes handed out at everyone's favorite late night haunt, The Gutter Bar. Features some hot goss, opinions, weather forecasts, bad jokes and whatever else catches our eye from the Croisette. If you missed our first edition featuring Rob Mayhew, Flava Flav, and a f***, marry, kill byline from Mark Stenberg, you can read it below. Amidst the hundreds of activations at Cannes, it’s hard to stand out. So instead of another beach club, panel, or branded tote bag, we printed a newspaper. On real paper. And if you’re here at Cannes…we’ll see you tonight. 12 AM. Limited drop. Don't miss it. Featuring: SPORT BEACH United Talent Agency KLUTCH SPORTS GROUP, LLC VML Serve Robotics Mark Stenberg Jameson Fleming Lea Karam Rob Mayhew ADWEEK Campaign US MM+M - Medical Marketing and Media

  • One of the things we've been thinking a lot about at Caliber is how to create spaces where people can engage with the news in ways that feel thoughtful, social, and genuinely fun. On June 23, The Recount is putting that into practice with Red, White & Roasted at NeueHouse: a night of political storytelling, live improv, and controlled chaos featuring Gianmarco Soresi, Ashley St. Clair, Peyton Dix, and LizaBanks Campagna. If you're in NYC and looking for a different kind of political event, we'd love to see you there. https://lnkd.in/eWyFVi5j

  • The customer journey is experiencing a shift across all sectors. Next week at Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, our Chief Commercial Officer Lotte Jones will join the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) for a discussion on what it actually takes to win the full journey end-to-end, without losing the craft that turns attention into loyalty. She'll be speaking alongside alongside Paul D'Arcy (Moloco), Fernando Machado (Chipotle Mexican Grill), and Domenic DiMeglio (Paramount streaming). Request an invite here: https://lnkd.in/gbie9Jck

  • A note from The News Movement Editor-in-Chief on the UK Government's proposed u16 social media ban.

We now have the [nebulous] shape of the UK government’s proposed social media ban for u16s. Ignoring the realpolitik of a government in crisis, looming leadership contests, plummeting popularity and urgent legacy building, I can’t help but be disappointed in the quality of the thinking, lack of clarity & the real-world consequences of policing online harms. Everyone wants to protect young people online. The manosphere, bad actors and extreme content are grim byproducts of an internet which publishes 450 terabytes of data daily. It's impossible not to be moved by the tragedy of young lives lost, or the strength of parents who have led campaigns to protect young people. Ian Russell, whose daughter died after watching appalling content, has become a reluctant expert in tech, regulation&policy - all in his daughter’s memory. This is what fuels The News Movement, and all of the brands within Caliber. Each day, we set out to provide good quality information and journalism for the next generation. A ban which removes social media access without a real plan, or without addressing what replaces it only solves half the problem. It ignores the real-world problems - poor media literacy, a mental health crisis, climate anxiety, economic inactivity, an epidemic of VAWG. These existed before social media, they aren’t symptoms of it. What comes next - when young people reach the ‘cliff edge’ of their 17th or 18th birthdays? Will they be more or less equipped to deal with an attention economy? Will their ability to distinguish between useful and harmful content be more attuned or underdeveloped? What support will they get from school, government or parents? The answers are still buffering somewhere inside Downing St. Starmer's announcement spoke to a cohort of concerned parents - not the young people impacted by his plans. What about vulnerable young people for whom the internet is a lifeline? The oft-cited age verification technology doesn’t exist, and the UK government hasn’t even decided where responsibility lies. Is it the platforms? Is it your device? These gaps are the result of a rushed-through consultation without even a white paper. Ian Russell’s verdict that it’s ‘deplorable’ echoes loudly. At Caliber, we think young audiences need information that meets them where they already are online, rather than handed to them somewhere else. Government regulation can remove what's broken, but it can’t and shouldn’t build an alternative. That’s what the industry should be doing… and Caliber heeds the call. Our new app, SaySo, is designed without addictive features - the endless scroll, ability to message. It’s a curated ecosystem of verified news creators - you dip in, learn something new - and leave. It’s the opposite of a dopamine hit, and the opposite of Big Tobacco, where social media is now being filed. How we clean up the internet is an essential conversation - but it’s one I wish more good actors, like us, could have been a part of.
