The #WildfireActionAccelerator, in action. Over two weeks this July, 40 people completed training as Specialist Brigade Members in Integrated Fire Management in Cuenca, Ecuador. The course was delivered by Ecuador's Ministry of Environment and Energy (Ministerio de Ambiente y Energía), with support from Environmental Defense Fund and Hivos. Participants represented different levels of government and institutions: Technical staff from Cuenca's municipal public enterprise, the Cuenca Volunteer Fire Brigade and the Ministry of Environment and Energy. The training was grounded in an Integrated Fire Management approach, combining fire prevention, preparedness, response, and the ecological and social dimensions of fire. Content spanned fire ecology, the Incident Command System, tools and equipment, direct, parallel and indirect attack techniques, operational safety, first aid, alternatives to the use of fire, and environmental education. This is what the Wildfire Action Accelerator pledge signed at COP30 looks like on the ground. Ecuador was among the countries that led its launch, committing to integrating fire management into climate and forest policy and to build national capacity. Two weeks in Cuenca, 40 trained brigade members, three institutions now working from a shared command structure. As Vice-Minister Alicia Jaramillo noted, specialist training improves coordination between institutions, protects operational safety and increases effectiveness in emergencies. The ongoing and historic fires in France and Spain are sending a clear message: In a new era of hotter baseline temperatures, drier fuels and expanded fire seasons, the world needs prevention-first, built-before-the-season actions.

As flooding becomes more frequent and costly, communities need more tools to reduce losses. Natural systems such as wetlands, mangroves, forests, dunes and floodplains can absorb water, slow runoff, reduce storm surge, and limit flooding. But their flood-risk reduction value is not always clearly or consistently reflected in insurance models, pricing, maps or mitigation incentives. A new report by EDF's Tallant Burley and Kelly Suttles outlines practical recommendations to help close that gap and better align flood insurance with investments that reduce risk and strengthen long-term resilience.
