The reason I became good at recruiting is because I learned to see past the resume. I saw the person behind the piece of paper. I saw potential that didn’t always fit neatly into bullet points, job titles, or a perfectly linear career path. And sometimes, I had to challenge my clients’ first impressions. “Just give them 30 minutes.” I’ve said some version of that more times than I can count—often with a lot of pushback. But many of those conversations ended with a very different response: “You were right. I’m glad we met them.” Some of those candidates are still with those companies today, thriving in roles they may never have been considered for if someone had only looked at their resume. Am I always right? Of course not. But I trust my gut. I know people. And after more than 20 years of interviewing, hiring, leading, coaching, and now recruiting, I’ve learned that some of the best candidates don’t always have the best resume. Sometimes the person who changes your business is the person you almost didn’t interview. A resume tells you where someone has been. A conversation can show you where they’re capable of going.
