If you manage workers across morning and afternoon shifts in hot conditions, Dr. Glenn Kenny recently published a study worth a read. The research looked at Initial Stay Time (IST). IST is how long a worker can safely work without rest before their core body temperature hits a concerning level. Workers completing heavy-intensity labor at 26°C WBGT could sustain about 60 minutes of continuous work in the morning before needing structured rest. In the afternoon, after a lunch break, that window dropped to roughly 29 minutes. These were the same workers, in the same conditions, doing the same kind of work. The only difference is they were already carrying fatigue from the heat load experienced that morning. For EHS managers running morning-into-afternoon operations, it's important to understand that your workers are entering the afternoon with residual heat strain already built up. That means they could hit dangerous thresholds faster and may need closer supervision and earlier intervention than they did in the morning. The good news from the study is that structured work-rest cycles, once implemented, did effectively keep core temperatures in a safe range. Worth keeping in mind for teams still dealing with elevated temperatures this fall. I'd love to hear how your teams are approaching shift scheduling for heat management. https://lnkd.in/d-he-9xy

  • We’ve raised a $110M Series C, led by Silversmith Capital Partners with continued support from Arthur Ventures, to advance our mission of eliminating the impact of severe weather and extreme heat for organizations that work, practice, and play outdoors. 3,200+ customers including the MLB, thousands of schools, and 24 of the top 25 general contractors on ENR’s Top 400 list trust Perry Weather to help them mitigate weather risk. This investment lets us take that work further, and we’re hiring aggressively at our Dallas HQ to make it happen. We plan to add more than 50 roles through 2027 across engineering, product, support, and services. Come build with us and explore our open roles: https://lnkd.in/gmXuAqVJ A huge thank you to Silversmith Capital Partners for leading this round, and for the continued support from Arthur Ventures.

Weather in the Midwest definitely keeps you on your toes, so having good information in the field makes a big difference. We’ve been using Perry Weather on a number of our construction projects, and it’s been a really useful tool for both safety and planning. We get site specific weather monitoring, lightning and severe weather alerts, wind and heat notifications, historical weather data, and an outdoor siren system that helps communicate quickly across the site when conditions change. Another feature I really like is having access to meteorologists. Sometimes the radar tells one story, but when you’re trying to make a call around crane work, concrete, manpower, or whether a storm is actually going to hit the site, being able to talk to someone and get a more specific read is extremely helpful. It’s one more tool that helps our teams make better decisions and stay ahead of changing conditions. I’ll share a few pictures of the setup we’re using on site. If you’re looking at something similar for your projects, reach out to my buddy Cade Clayton with Perry Weather. He’s been a great resource for us.

There's something humbling and motivating about a track workout at 6am with people who are genuinely fast! This morning I ran three rounds of 3 x 600m at 5:30/mi pace with 200m jogs between. Hard work. Megan Connolly right behind me has qualified for the US Olympic Marathon Trials. The person filming us, Heather Knight, holds a course age group record at the Boston Marathon. I've been a competitive athlete long enough to understand what it takes, and what can go wrong when conditions aren't right. Years of training and competing gave me a real feel for what athletes go through, especially in the heat. One year I collapsed at the USAT National Championships due to the heat. One year I ended up in an ambulance during Ironman Wisconsin with hypothermia. I've been that athlete suffering from environmental conditions and now I get to help teams, coaches, and athletic departments think seriously about heat and environmental safety in sport. Make sure the people who are pushing their limits have someone, like a coach or an AT, thinking about those limits too. This was never an obvious career path for me, but looking back now it makes complete sense. Surround yourself with people who push you and who make you better. In sport and in everything else. I'm so happy I found that through my PhD career at the Korey Stringer Institute and now at Perry Weather.
