Day One at the SDG Media Zone placed Peace, Security and Human Rights at the center of the conversation. Across today’s programming, speakers including UN Under-Secretary-General Melissa Fleming, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, UN High Commissioner for Refugees Barham Salih, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency Goodwill Ambassador Mary Nyiriak Maker, Guy Ryder, and International Telecommunication Union Director-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin, as well as representatives from WIRED, Teen Vogue, Arab News and Al Jazeera Media Network explored what it takes to build more peaceful, just and inclusive societies in a rapidly changing world. Conversations ranged from investing in youth-led peacebuilding and protecting human rights in conflict, to refugee education, women in peacekeeping, trusted data in the age of AI, human-centered digital governance and the role of multilateral cooperation in responding to global disruption. Across each session, one message came through clearly that lasting progress depends on protecting human dignity, strengthening trust and ensuring that people remain at the center of decisions shaping our shared future.

Reporting from the SDG Media Zone! 🌍 Members of the UN Secretary-General’s Youth Advisory Group on Climate Change recently discussed how climate change is affecting the lives of youth across Africa. The conclusion is clear: the climate crisis is not just an environmental issue, it is a “systemic problem” that affects education, health and economic stability. It poses a direct threat to the progress made towards sustainable development. Although Africa contributes the least to global emissions, the continent's youth are on the front lines of climate resilience. From solar powering rural schools to innovative water-saving solutions, young leaders are becoming architects of change, not just beneficiaries. As the #AfricanUnion focuses on water sustainability this year, it is crucial to engage young individuals as strategic partners. The future belongs to the youth, as 70% of the continent’s population is under the age of 25. To achieve the #GlobalGoals, we must move from consultation to action and give young people the “ambition and space” they need to lead.
