THE VERY HIGH COST OF FRAGMENTATION: I keep hearing the same warning from creators, platforms and agencies: affiliate marketing is moving faster than brands can organize around it. This mismatch is expensive. Affiliate marketing is set to drive an estimated $241 billion in U.S. commerce this year. While affiliate spending is rising 11.3%, ahead of ecommerce’s 6.7% growth. EMARKETER As the opportunity grew, brands spread the work across social, affiliate, paid media, PR and ecommerce. Every team has its piece but no one owns the OUTCOME. One creator shared that a brand had recently hired her for a campaign. Then a different team at the same company saw her posts, mistook it for organic enthusiasm, and offered to send her products for free. The company could not tell its own paid campaign from organic content. That’s what happens when you organize around where people sit instead of HOW THE BUSINESS MAKES MONEY. Creator commerce giant, LTK is building for the opposite. At LTKCon last month the company launched an agentic AI system that starts from a business objective, builds the campaign, recommends the creators and forecasts the return. It sets performance targets for the creator and the brand, and gives both sides one set of analytics. "It has become too large, too important, too operationally complex for all these disconnected workflows," Amber Venz Box, president and co-founder of LTK, told me. But the technology only works if someone inside the company owns the business outcome. "What matters is that the function has enough seniority and connectivity across the business," said Patricia Marange of WPP Media. "Otherwise, you risk creating another silo while trying to solve for silos." My latest Forbes piece looks at what the fragmentation costs and what brands getting ahead (shout out to Pat Burke at Target) are doing differently. Thank you to Amber Venz Box, Pat Burke, Brittany Sjogren Patricia Marangé, Ty Amell and Ali Decker Marino for helping me tell this story. Link in comments below:
