A couple weeks ago, I was invited to Albuquerque on a jet piloted by Adam Grosser to visit with startups that are part of a fascinating experiment in New Mexico. The state has a massive sovereign wealth fund — $75 billion — from oil and gas revenue, which it uses to support critical services, including a first-in-the-nation universal childcare program. Now, it is pouring a large sum of that money into some of Silicon Valley's biggest VC firms to invest in startups, in the hopes of creating more stable returns for the state than famously volatile — and finite — oil reserves. There is so much debate about whether the wealth being created in the AI boom will be shared beyond the usual nodes of tech and finance in the Bay Area, New York etc. In the race to the technological frontier, government is typically cast as a villain or an obstacle. New Mexico's program is still early. But it shows a potential model for spreading that wealth to the middle of the country — and for how government can participate directly in the booming startup economy. Thanks to Adam, Chris Sacca, Brian Adams, Annica Benning, Augustus Doricko, Ryan Sommerville, Chris Cassidy, Charles Wollmann, Alex Doniach, Suraj Shah and others. https://lnkd.in/gW2MHvCT

New Mexico is putting $2 billion into getting startups to build there. I flew out with the UP.Partners team to see what that actually looks like through their New Mexico-focused fund, UP.Abundance. The state has the second-largest sovereign wealth fund in the US, with $75 billion under management. That $2 billion is being allocated across venture funds backing companies that build or expand in the state. I spent the day with Adam Grosser, Ally Warson, Brian Adams and David Ellmann, visiting three of the fund’s portfolio companies. We went from the groundbreaking of Pacific Fusion’s $1 billion R&D facility to cloud-seeding drones at Rainmaker Technology Corporation and autonomous aircraft at Reliable Robotics Corporation. These founders aren’t just choosing where to put an office. They’re choosing where they can get the land, infrastructure, talent and support to actually build. That’s a very different decision when you’re developing a fusion reactor rather than shipping software. Silicon Valley might be where you raise. That doesn’t mean it has to be where you build. New INSIDE Startups episode out now.

  • The greatest opportunity in humanoid robotics is taking on the dangerous and physically demanding work that still depends on people. Getting there requires both an industrial machine and a platform that can learn new skills quickly and adapt to real-world conditions. That’s what Noble Machines is building. Their approach brings together three things we think matter enormously: cost, physical capability, and accelerated learning. And they’re moving quickly. It took the team just 18 months to build and ship their first robot. We’re big fans of their approach and the commercial progress they’re already making. Take a look at noblemachines.ai.

Enterprise freight is full of AI pilots that never make it into daily operations at scale. Today we're announcing $5.5 million led by UP.Partners with participation from EIC Rose Rock, 1834 Ventures, Tulane Ventures, and others. We took a different path. We built Overroute inside real operations, with real data and real operators. Our AI agents are deployed across the freight network of J.B. Hunt Transport Services, Inc., where the product was collaboratively developed, and they've worked on millions of loads. The funding goes into the product roadmap and the team, so we can serve more large fleets and keep building toward broader freight planning and asset optimization. Grateful to our investors, our customers, and especially the operators who continue to shape what we build. We’re excited for what comes next.

My first conversation with Adam Grosser, Chairman of UP.Partners. Adam is a Silicon Valley OG and it would have been hard to cover five different decades in 2 hours so we will have to do a round two. Adam is a 4x Forbes Midas List investor and was a part of building two multibillion dollar companies in the 1990s before he started investing in startups. We discuss a bit of Silicon Valley history as he started at Apple in the 1980s, lessons from working with Steve Jobs who he had known since 1979, building products at Lucasfilm, investing at Foundation Capital and bringing in lessons from his time in PE at prominent private equity firm focused on technology, Silver Lake and how to build a lasting venture firm among a range of other topics.

  • 80% of designers' time is wasted on manual iteration loops between engineers and manufacturers. The problem is that design, engineering, and manufacturability all happen in separate tools. Teams can spend months optimizing a design, only to discover it can't actually be manufactured. This siloed workflow is wasting billions of dollars and a lot of time. InfinitForm has built a single space for design, engineering, and manufacturability to work in parallel. The result is: companies create the best design in minutes, not months. It's a fundamentally different way to design real products, and that's what caught our attention. Trial the platform: https://infinitform.com/

  • 72% of everything America buys moves by truck, but the economics are tough. Trailers are one of the biggest reasons why: they're essentially dead weight. Every mile they travel with this weight costs fleets money in fuel, which adds up quickly across hundreds or thousands of trucks. Range Energy makes the trailer feel weightless, helping fleets cut operating costs by 20-40% on day one. Follow the link in comments to see how they're doing this with equipment customers already have. #supplychain #logistics #freight

  • Congratulations to the Overroute team on today's launch with J.B. Hunt. Built alongside one of North America's largest supply chain solutions providers, Overroute's AI agents are already helping operators coordinate millions of loads by automating the complex work behind freight. We're looking forward to what's ahead!

Today we are finally sharing the Overroute team’s hard work and progress with the world. Freight operations don’t need another dashboard or a general-purpose AI tool. They need technology that turns information into action to deliver measurable value in the workflows operators already use. Overroute’s AI agents help carriers execute the work around every load: monitoring operations, surfacing exceptions, supporting appointment workflows, drafting communications, and closing coordination loops across fragmented systems. Built inside J.B. Hunt’s live intermodal, truckload, dedicated, and brokerage operations, Overroute has been shaped by the realities of enterprise freight from day one. We’re starting with coordination: giving operators more time for the decisions where their experience and judgment matter most. From there, the opportunity is even bigger—better planning, stronger execution, and more productive use of every asset across the network. Practical AI. Built around operators. Proven in real operations. Freight doesn’t need more AI theater. It needs AI that works.

  • The venture model is evolving. As AI reshapes software economics, investors are increasingly backing business models like holding companies, PE rollups, forward-deployed engineering firms, and full-stack hardware/software platforms that were once considered outside the scope of traditional venture. In The Kinetic Age, we share data on why these models are gaining momentum and what they mean for the next generation of founders and investors.
