The AI-native operating system for mortgage servicing. Building a better foundation for the American Dream.

About us

Valon: the AI-native operating system for mortgage servicing. Building a better foundation for the American Dream. A New Foundation for Complex, Regulated Workflows Mortgage servicing is core infrastructure for the U.S. economy, underpinning the American Dream of owning a home, yet it relies on software that pre-dates the creation of the internet. Valon built a system of record that unifies workflows, data, and money movement into a single, coherent platform. The result is software that scales with complexity instead of collapsing under it. There are $100B+ in mortgages on the platform. $230M raised to date. And ValonOS has 3x lower servicing cost with +30% higher customer satisfaction (compared to industry averages). If you’re energized by solving the hardest problems, moving fast without breaking trust, and finding joy in cracking what others will not touch, come work at Valon.

San Francisco! Valon is hosting two events as part of TECH WEEK by a16z First off is Why Pick the Boring, our panel featuring Hongxia Zhong, Jake Mintz, Jamshed Vesuna and David L. who will share why "boring" industries are oftentimes the best opportunities as well as their journey into these industries. We will also be hosting Valon Labs Live, a one-day coworking space in SOMA. Bring your laptop, catch up on work, meet other builders, and grab coffee or matcha on us. Space is limited at both events so RSVP early! Links in the comments.

We went back to CMU recently for the career fair. It's one of my favorite trips every year. Had to hit the usual spots first: hotcakes at Pamela's and mussels at Point Brugge. The energy on campus never gets old. James Wang, John Leggio, and I spent the day at the Valon booth talking to students who asked great questions and clearly think hard about what they want to work on. We also got dinner with a group of really smart and fun candidates, which is always the best part of the trip. Thanks to everyone who stopped by! If you're interested in taking on the impossible, feel free to reach out at https://lnkd.in/gtR9XJ3k

What's it like working at the intersection of AI and regulation? Tamjid Rahman has spent the last 2 years living this reality and will be sharing his experience at the Ground Truth conference in SF. Some open spots if you're curious to learn more!

I'll be a panelist at Ground Truth, a half-day conference hosted by Sphere x Andreessen Horowitz, on September 17th in SF. We still have a few open seats. If you're building in regulated, high-stakes environments, apply here: https://lnkd.in/g-WgYRas More on Ground Truth: For senior engineers working at the intersection of AI x regulation. Two technical panels: (1) Reliability guarantees in production AI and human-in-the-loop design and (2) Compliance as a moat On the second panel, I'll share how I'm seeing compliance requirements reposture from cost center to moat, and how truly grokking your domain is becoming more important, not less! I'm excited to learn from fellow engineers hailing from the likes of Harvey, Luminai, Databricks, Raindrop, and other teams shipping AI where the stakes are high.

A few weeks ago, we turned off AI access for (most) new hires. We use AI aggressively at Valon. But people need to understand the work first; in mortgage servicing, that means building enough judgment to question and verify the output. Thanks to Sarah E. Needleman K. and Business Insider for covering the decision.

We turned off AI access for new (non-engineering) hires. We use AI aggressively and expect folks to learn the shape of the problem before they use AI to solve it. In mortgage servicing, that means getting into the details, learning how the systems work, and building enough judgment to question and verify the output. Andrew W. explains why we made this decision and how we’re rethinking the way people ramp at Valon.

Two weeks ago, we turned off AI access for every new non-engineering hire at Valon. That is a weird decision for a company at the frontier of AI adoption, even though our experienced employees have become extraordinarily fast with it. With deep context, they now solve in 20 minutes what used to take hours or days. That is exactly the problem. Those difficult handoffs were our apprenticeship model. New employees learned mortgage servicing by debugging reconciliation errors and tracing edge cases. Now experienced people can do the work faster than they can delegate it, while new employees can produce answers that are perhaps 95% right before they know enough to recognize the 5% that is wrong. Candidly, turning off access is crude and temporary. Access now begins when a manager can attest that a new employee knows enough to question the model and verify its work. The goal is not less AI. It is AI that strengthens judgment instead of replacing the experiences that create it. We are investing in compounding people. Full post in the comments.

Our design team stopped asking "how do we connect Figma to the codebase" and started asking a better question: "what's the highest-leverage thing a design team does when models can produce the pixels?" Their answer: the thinking. The design system is now 'rules in markdown', context shaped for the models and the designers are climbing the stack from pixels to strategy. A candid conversation with the team on what worked, what didn't (early prototypes created more noise than alignment), and what's next. https://lnkd.in/gwqn8B-B
