Why does the Waymo Driver rely on cameras, radar, and lidar? The answer comes down to sensor fusion. While it is easy to assume multiple sensor modalities are just layers of backup, each one plays an indispensable role in how the vehicle perceives its surroundings. At a recent Y Combinator Startup School session, our co-CEO Dmitri Dolgov walked through the engineering philosophy behind the Waymo Driver.

270 million fully autonomous miles. 841 fewer injury-causing crashes. Waymo has driven the equivalent of over 300 human lifetimes behind the wheel across Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Francisco through June 2026. Compared to human driving benchmarks over that same distance in those cities, the Waymo Driver had: 📉 82% fewer injury-causing crashes 📉 95% fewer serious injury or worse crashes As our service scales, road safety scales with it. Shared mobility is a team effort. Today, we’re excited to announce a first-of-its-kind transit rewards program, kicking off in the San Francisco Bay Area. SF Bay Area riders can earn Waymo Cash when autonomous rides are combined with public transit connections. Transit rewards works alongside the regional transfer discount programs and tap-to-pay model launched in the San Francisco Bay Area last December. Riders will link their Visa card in the Waymo app to enroll. Transit rewards will gradually roll out to riders in the San Francisco Bay Area in the coming weeks with plans to expand to more cities.  Our phased roadmap: • Late this year: Waymo vehicles arrive in Singapore. 
 • Early 2027: Initial operations begin, focused on high-definition mapping and validation driving with trained Autonomous Specialists behind the wheel to adapt to local traffic environments. 
 • Early 2028: Public launch of our fully autonomous ride-hailing service via the Waymo app.
