Every active AI project gets reviewed in a steerco every two weeks. If the numbers aren't tracking, they adjust or kill it. -> Will it reduce cost to serve? They map workflows before they build anything. Team by team, task by task. How many clicks, how much time, how many people touching it. If the math doesn't pencil on paper, they don't greenlight it. What happens when your reps have the time to start building real carrier relationships? Evans Transportation found out: an increase to 75-80% repeat carrier usage. Before, their team was spending all day on the phone - posting loads to the open board, taking whoever showed up. No time to check load history and build or develop those carrier relationships. Most freight problems don’t start on the road. They start at the dock. If you don’t understand how a warehouse thinks, a lot of “carrier problems” won’t make sense. Chris Brumett has spent 30 years inside supply chain execution - warehouse systems, yard systems, transportation workflows. Now he’s the Chief Product Officer at Terminal Industries , building what he calls a yard operating system to fix one of the most overlooked handoff points in freight: gate → yard → dock. On this week’s episode of The Freight Show we broke down what every broker and carrier should understand: 1) Warehouses optimize for labor, not your margin. Door assignments aren’t random. They’re based on velocity, storage zones (frozen vs ambient), and minimizing travel time inside the building. Every extra move costs money. 2) Appointments exist to protect dock capacity. They allow facilities to forecast labor and pre-stage loads. But staging a 24-pallet shipment can clog multiple doors for hours. So when a driver is late, it’s not just “late.” It’s congestion, reshuffled labor, and ripple effects across the dock. 3) The ASN helps - but it’s incomplete. Facilities may know what’s on the trailer. They often don’t know the actual operating carrier if the load was re-brokered. That’s where check-in friction starts. 4) Inbound priority is driven by outbound pain. Two loads can look identical to a broker. To the facility, one might prevent a stockout or protect a promo item. Inbound scheduling isn’t first-come-first-serve. It’s tied to what the building needs today. 5) The yard is still wildly under-optimized. Many large facilities are running it on spreadsheets. When a spotter spends 45 minutes hunting for a trailer, the cost isn’t just spotter time. It’s dock crews waiting. It’s detention. It’s trucks stacked at the gate. Freight ops breaks at the handoff points. Understanding what’s happening inside the building changes how you think about everything outside of it.
